  • Kibali-Ituri, Babira woman

Unused card from the 1960s, a bit bent rather than folded through the middle–this doesn’t really show on the front, but left a mark on reverse. Published by the Office National Congolais du Tourisme before Congo changed to Zaire and back again. We would like to observe that this card is very, very “ethnic.” Grade: 2

  • Leopoldville, Ave. Beernaert

Not sure of age but could be 1940s based on appearance of cars. Real photo, never mailed Photo Tropica antique postcard with noticeable abrasions around the edges only, and a small stain on lower right reverse. Grade: 4

    Code: 20413009

    Price: $16.00

  • Market scene

Two of these cards are available. They are real photos printed on heavy stock and sold as postcards though they had no printing on reverse. The first card was mailed in 1968, has seven (yes, seven) intact stamps and mostly legible postmarks. There was no real room for a message. (Grade: 1, $16). The other was never mailed and has “Kinshasa, Congo” inked in small letters on bottom reverse (Grade: 3, $6).

  • Leopoldville, Magasins Militaires du Depot d’Armee

This is a spectacularly uninteresting Tropica Prisma postcard unless you have particular interest in military goods storage, in which case it’s just what you want. Not sure of date (1940s?) but it’s a real photo and apart from obviously yellowed reverse is unmarked and in very good condition. Grade: 2

    Code: 20413014

    Price: $9.00

Leopoldville, Magasins Militaires du Depot d’Armee
  • Matadi, the port

This Bromophoto card dates from the transition out of “Belgian Congo” because the printed caption on reverse has “Belge” blotted out in blue. This B&W card was never mailed, is a real photo, has two tiny blotches on front and a normally aging reverse. Grade: 3

    Code: 20413015

    Price: $6.50

  • Kinshasa, overview

This real photo was printed on heavy stock and–like many other cards of that era–sold as a postcard despite having no commercial printing on the reverse. Mailed in 1968, it has five stamps and partly legible postmarks. This card shows nearly no ill effects of either aging or having been mailed. Grade: 1

    Code: 20413016

    Price: $15.00

    Price: $11.00
