    This card from the Ceylon Tourist Board was mailed in 1982, with two stamps and a full postmark, but the writing is a mess. The hand-stamped postmark was so strong it punched right through the card. Grade: 4

  • Minneriya Tank

    Wikipedia tells us:  “Minneriya tank is a reservoir in Sri Lanka made by an old civilisation; the Anuradhapura Kingdom. King Mahasena ordered a dam build across the Minneriya River, which made the lake. The tank covered 4,670 acres.”  This unused postcard only seems that old, as it is extremely heavily aged on the reverse.  Grade: 3

    Weligama is a town on the south coast of Sri Lanka, located in Matara District. The name Weligama literally means “sandy village” which refers to the area’s sandy sweep bay.  The unused Ceylon Tourist Post Card, like others we have from this series, is quite heavily aged on the reverse.  Grade: 3

    Despite two overlapping postmarks, it’s hard to say when this old postcard was mailed — early in the 20th century, we think.  As many senders did in those days, they wrapped the stamp over to the front.  It might not be obvious in the small scan, but there’s a “Christmas Greetings” imprint on the upper left.  Grade: 1
