It’s Definitely the 21st Century Now

You’ve heard of ChatGPT, right?  If not, it would be good for you to find out what it is before you read further.    ChatGPT has been widely publicized here in Hong Kong, but when we tried to sample it, a message appears on the screen:  “Not available in your country”.   No surprises there (apart from wondering how many people here actually have the VPN needed to reach it).

So we enlisted help from friend Aaron in a country where ChatGPT is readily available, and asked him to enter this statement:  “Explain the importance of postcards as a type of social communication.”  No limits on content, structure, length, number of examples, or anything else.  Just as you see.  Aaron did that, and what you see below is exactly what ChatGPT produced.  No edits:

“Postcards have played an important role in social communication for over a century.  Here are some reasons why postcards are important:
1. Convenience: Postcards are small, lightweight, and easy to carry, making them a convenient way to communicate with friends and family while traveling or living far away. They are also inexpensive to buy and send.
2. Historical significance: Postcards offer a unique glimpse into the past, as they often contain images of buildings, landscapes, and people that are no longer in existence. Postcards can serve as valuable historical documents that help to preserve memories and cultural heritage.
3. Cultural exchange: Postcards can be used to exchange ideas, art, and cultural information between different countries and regions. They can help to promote understanding and appreciation of different cultures and ways of life.
4. Personal touch: Postcards offer a personal touch that is often missing from other forms of communication. A handwritten note or message on a postcard can convey warmth, care, and thoughtfulness.
5. Collectibility: Postcards can be collectible items, with some postcards becoming highly sought-after by collectors. This can add to their historical and cultural significance, as well as their value as collectibles.
Overall, postcards have been and continue to be an important means of social communication, providing a tangible and personal way to connect with others, share experiences, and preserve memories.”

We don’t know about you, but we are impressed.   We have no way of knowing whether ChatGPT created this out of its own sense of Artificial Intelligence, or whether it scoured Google to find the most suitable entry addressing the original question.  Either way, no wonder it can pass Bar exams.

Thanks for reading this far, and there’s just one more thing.  We created an Instagram account for ourselves and to give Global Postcard Sales a little boost.  You can find it under my name (Jim Kushner) with user account  goloh8888.  It will be our own morale boost if we can collect a few followers, and in return we’ll happily follow you back, “like” your photos, whatever Instagram lets us do.  We’re still learning.

Enough for today.  Credit to Aaron, and to ChatGPT.

Bye for now.
