Post Office
As Macau morphs into something new and beyond most imaginations, this building near the Leal Senado should remain. Two unused Hor Toi Bookshop cards from 1970s are available. One is aging on reverse but with dignity (Grade: 2, $16). The other really looks as-new (Grade: 1, $19).

One of Macau’s two most iconic locations. It still looks like this, but at the same time it doesn’t, and we guess you need to visit there to see what we mean. Three cards from the 1970s are available. Two are unused (Grades: 1, $19) and one was mailed in 1983, with three nice stamps and a readable postmark (Grade: 1, $43)

Makok, Goddess of Ama
Two of these unused 1970s cards are available, aging, still in good condition. The caption reports “‘Makok’ the Goddess of Ama from which the name Macao is derived. Temple of fisherfolk.” Grades: 1

Governors Mansions
Now this scene has changed in many more ways than one. Three cards are available, from the 1970s. Two are unused, slightly aged (Grades: 1, $21) and one was mailed in 1981 with two stamps, but is heavily creased (Grade: 3, $19).

One of Macau’s oldest restaurants, and definitely one of our favourites, Fat Siu Lau may or may not survive Macau’s transition. We hope so, as it’s far from the casinos. Unused card from the 1970s or so, and no western lettering at all. Grade: 1

Border gate with China
More from this 1970s series distributed by the Hor Tai Bookshop. Two of these cards are available, showing the old border gate separating Macao from the China mainland. This crossing has become a bit more sophisticated now, and a whole lot bigger. One card is unused and in great shape (Grade: 1, $22) while the other was mailed in 1982, with three stamps and illegible postmarks, and a blue airmail sticker affixed (Grade: 1, $34)

Public Garden
Old Macanese cards are getting very scarce as Old Macao disappears and continues to reinvent itself. This postcard was published by Turco-Egyptian Tobacco Store (Hongkong), is unused and in excellent shape apart from normal aging. Grade: 2

Central City and Harbour
Beautiful old unused M. Sternberg card 7109, with minor album indents on corners, and a pencilled date notation (“1915”) on the back. The front is normally aged but completely undamaged. Considering Macau’s aspirations to be the Monte Carlo of Asia, cards like this will be very hard to find. Grade: 3

A very old, postally unused card, unattributed. The sender got as far as writing “Mr. J. B” on the reverse. We wonder if the sender was then kidnapped by pirates? Or smuggled into a gambling den? We’ll never know. The card was in an album and has indentation fading on two corners. Grade: 3

Macau-Taipa Bridge at night
Before there were multiple bridges, before Taipa and Coloane were merged into one island, and before Macau became what it is now–Nevada on steroids–there was this bridge. It’s the old Lisboa Casino all lit up in the photo. The card was mailed with three stamps and multiple but not really legible postmarks in 1981. Those were the days … Grade: 2

Mailed in 1978 with two different stamps and mostly legible postmark, this card has an airmail rubber stamp mark, but–more prominently–a large and very red “Silver Jubilee Grande Premio de Macau” rubber stamp mark. This honestly is a one-of-a-kind card. Grade: 1

The historic centre of Macau entered the World Heritage List on 15 July 2005 as the 31st such site in China. The reverse of this folio lists the contents of all 25 cards.
