  • Whitey’s (East Grand Forks, Minnesota, USA) – coaster

By 1969, when this unused paper coaster came along, Whitey’s had been in that location since Prohibition, and looked it — about as iconic an old-fashioned bar as you could find anywhere in the Midwest, and especially welcoming to Canadian visitors.  It seems to have gone through some changes and then closed in 2017, but we were long gone by then.  Grade: 1

  • Ile Prestige Restaurant (Lagos, Nigeria) – menu card

A small, folded and very well-used menu from a long-gone local cafe in downtown Lagos, 32 Moloney Street.  This is when Google is at its best:  search that address and you find, now, a church, apartments, an advertising agency, and other companies.  Yet Google’s street view wouldn’t seem to support all of those.  We won’t know, as we are unlikely to visit Lagos again, but this menu is a great old artifact.  Grade 3

    Code: 50000462

    Price: $16.00

  • Used beverage labels

This lot is exactly what it looks like:  a total of 31 labels peeled off beer and other beverage bottles, mostly the 1960s, and mostly from one or another variant of Tusker Beer in Kenya or Tanzania,  There’s no point to enumerate them all.  They’re old labels in varying conditions.  Mixed grades.

    Code: 50000465

    Price: $15.00

  • Restaurant License (Iowa, USA)

No doubt when this was issued for a tavern in Roland, a small Iowa town whose location and size belied a most colourful history.  Grade: 2

    Price: $8.00

  • El Patio Sevillano – Seville (Spain)

This multilingual, multi-page pamphlet (4-1/8″ x 6-1/4″ when closed) is all about the entertainment they offer, but we liked their own website’s description so we are just repeating much of it here:  “The patio sevillano, the oldest tablao in Seville, Flamenco show founded in 1952 (and) located on Paseo de Cristobal Colon next to the emblematic Triana Bridge, the bullring, the Maestranza and the gold tower. We have been offering the best flamenco show in Seville for over half a century together with the best artists nationwide. Are you going to miss it?”  Unfortunately, we’re nowhere near Seville.  Grade: 1
