Showing 1–40 of 42 postcards

  • Barber shop

We can suppose this unused card’s photo is from a Chinese-speaking country because there are Chinese characters on the calendar, but we’re guessing this is in Southeast Asia somewhere.  Grade: 2

    Code: 37900001

    Price: $1.00

    Price: $1.00

goCART postcard advertising 2008 (Hong Kong)
  • Lucky Strike, 1986 (Malaysia)

What makes this card unusual is not so much the 1986 calendar sponsored by Lucky Strike Filters–though you do not see a cigarette–as it is that it was used by the Malaysian Post Office to introduce a postcode system in the country. Each card has the correct code and city for the intended recipient’s area. It was delivered, but being from the Post Office itself, was of course not stamped or postmarked. Fully pre-printed in Bahasa Malaysia (Malay language) on the reverse.  Unique postcards like this are always worth a second look.  Grade: 1

    Code: 37900004

    Price: $6.00

  • Garden of happy memories (not a postcard)

Careful!  This is not a postcard!  It’s a novelty tear-off calendar published by Valentine’s Novelty Calendars in Great Britain a long time ago, measuring 4.25″ x 6″ altogether.  We do not know what year it is because we have not removed this from the plastic bag we received it in.  So we make no guarantees about year or condition of the little calendar inside.  Google was no help at all.  The reverse is blank.

    Code: 37900008

    Price: $8.50

Garden of happy memories (not a postcard)

  • Hibernia Savings Bank, July 1910 Calendar (Portland, Oregon, USA)

The text is fun to read, especially about being open on Saturday Evenings.  This card has an address typed on the undivided back, and was mailed, though there’s no stamp or postmark because it was the Bulk Mail of its time.  Grade: 1

    Code: 37900015

  • 100 Old Shanghai Calendars (set of 25) (PR China)

This set of 25 contemporary cards measures 7-7/8″ x 4-7/8″ x 1/2″, and because it is still sealed in the original cellowrap, we can’t verify what each individual card shows.  What we CAN say is that the scan you see is the back cover of the set, and if those thumbnails represent the 25 cards, that would explain where they got the figure “100”.  In any event, the set is unused and normal postage rates apply.  Two sets are available.   Grades: 1

    Code: 37900023

    Price: $22.00

100 Old Shanghai Calendars (set of 25) (PR China)
  • Mouse (Maximum Card) (PR China)

There’s a considerable back-story to this unused maximum card, and we are absolutely unable to explain it.  We consulted Hong Kong friends who said, in effect, nobody in Hong Kong now really understands this calendrical cycle well.  It’s apparently an old tradition in Mainland China.  Please don’t hold it against us that we can’t go much further than this, but the (Chinese-only) text on the reverse caption sounds something like “Mao Zi”.  It’s China Post’s card MC(E)-9 and postmarked 2008 but only went on sale in the Shenzhen post office in 2018.  Confused?  Not just you!  Grade: 1

    Code: 37900024

    Price: $3.00

  • E.P. Wilbur Trust Company (Pennsylvania, USA)

Really nice old (1910) ad card, mailed with indistinct postmark, and the stamp is still there.  We were especially taken with the offer of 3% interest on savings accounts.  By today’s standards, go for it!  Grade: 1

    Code: 37900026

    Price: $4.00

E.P. Wilbur Trust Company (Pennsylvania, USA)
  • E.P. Wilbur Trust Company – January 1910 (Pennsylvania, USA)

    Price: $4.00

  • September and October 2021

Or, as fine print reveals at the top of this 5-7/8″ x 8-1/4″ card, Dai Dark … Q-Hayashida/Shogakukan.  Mailed from Taiwan in 2021, the reverse has no more captioning but does have three stamps, two postmarks, decorative tape, message … Not to our taste, but maybe exactly to yours!  Grade: 4

    Code: 37900031

    Price: $2.00

    September and October 2021
  • Feliz Ano Nuevo! (Cuba)

We’re shocked this highly aged card has survived in such good condition:  stamp, partly legible postmark, and a long message in tiny Spanish handwriting that directed the card to Barcelona via New York in 1907.  It’s really nice, and can be yours.  Grade: 1

    Code: 37900032

    Price: $7.00

    Feliz Ano Nuevo! (Cuba)
  • Prosit Neujahr 1902!

An embossed, undivided back card, whose German stamp and postmark are there and whose aging and writing is totally appropriate for the era and the time that’s passed.  Yes, it’s handled and messy but we won’t downgrade it for that.  We would be delighted to receive such a card even now.  Grade: 1

    Code: 37900033

    Price: $3.00

    Prosit Neujahr 1902!
  • 2022

    Code: 37900035

    Price: $4.00

E.P. Wilbur Trust Company, South Bethlehem (Pennsylvania, USA)
  • Clarinda, Page County State Bank (Iowa, USA)

Bless their hearts, the bank is still there!  Good karma or what, we don’t know, but well done!  Neither do we know what connection John Greenleaf Whittier had with the bank, or with Clarinda, or even with Iowa … but we’re guessing managers chose from generic design options.  Mailed in March 1911 with stamp and postmark, so the calendar was still useful.  Grade: 1

    Code: 37900036

    Price: $4.00

Clarinda, Page County State Bank (Iowa, USA)
  • Worldway – 2023 (Hong Kong)

  • 1911

Lift up that red flap on the front and find a complete 1911 calendar of individual months.  How this unmailed card with a short message of “Greetings from your Chaplain” survived for this long is anyone’s guess.  Grade: 3

    Code: 37900038

    Price: $6.00

    1911
  • Almanack for 1910 – Happy Days

A lovely example of a calendar postcard, maybe not overly practical but perfectly representing its era.  As a bonus, it was mailed in August 1909, with stamp and completely clear Washington, D.C. postmark, to the Canal Zone.   Grade: 1

    Code: 37900039

    Price: $8.00

Almanack for 1910 – Happy Days
  • J.L. Brown calendar (USA)

Probably late in 1917, an American company called J.L. Brown sent this (unused, unmailed) card to its customers with a message fully taking up that area, inviting the customer to come in for the full year’s 1918 calendar as a gift.  We’ve no idea what kind of company it was, or even where; but if we did, we would be tempted to try — even now.  Grade: 1

    Code: 37900040

    Price: $4.00

    J.L. Brown calendar (USA)
  • Seasons Greetings 1962 (USA)

… and Happy New Year, but we have *absolutely no idea* what is going on here.  The front of the embossed card is as you see, with that small individually-paged 1962 calendar at the bottom.  It seems a bit fragile, so we have not tried to flip those pages and see if they are all there.  But that is not the real mystery.  The card was mailed in 1911 (not 1961 or 1962) from St. Louis.  The stamp and postmark are there, and we cannot say whether the calendar was added later or not.  Otherwise, Grade: 1

    Code: 37900041

    Price: $5.00
