  • Queen Isabella

The caption on the back of this unused Smith Novelty card S-029 gives a surprising amount of detail in a short space.  The sculpture, in Sacramento, California, is by Larkin Goldsmith Mead, and is called “Columbus’ Last Appeal to Queen Isabella,” weighs 40 tons, is made of carrera marble; and that’s just some of it.  Yes, we know, Queen Isabella never lived in Sacramento!  Grade: 1

    Code: 40500002

    Price: $1.00

    Queen Isabella
  • Lahaina, Maui (Hawaii, USA) – Front Street

Unused card 20X-C-19009 with serrated edges of this “Favorite spot of Hawaiian royalty in the 1800’s when it was the whaling capital of the world.”  However this card will need to be your memory, as the view was destroyed in the August 2023 fires.  Grade: 1

    Code: 40500003

    Price: $26.00

Lahaina, Maui (Hawaii, USA) – Front Street
  • Maryhill Museum of Fine Arts – Queen Marie of Roumania Gallery (Washington state, USA)

We were idly curious why Queen Marie had an entire gallery dedicated to her at this (arguably) obscure location, so we went to Wikipedia.  Describing the entire collection as “eclectic,” Wikipedia explains everything, including this:  “During her 1926 visit for the museum’s dedication, Queen Marie of Romania gave Maryhill more than 100 objects. These included personal items, Romanian folk objects, Russian icons and diverse textiles. That same year, Queen Marie’s oldest daughter Elisabetha, the former Queen Consort of Greece, gave the museum a collection of small Tanagra figurines and a number of ancient Cypriot amphorae. A year earlier, the museum had received its very first donation—three silver filigree objects—from Queen Marie’s second daughter, Marie, Queen Consort of the Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes.”  So now you know WHAT, we just don’t know WHY.  Unused card.  Grade: 3

    Code: 40500004

    Price: $1.00

  • Bangkok, Royal Barges (Thailand)

Apart from being an attractive card in its own right, it has five stamps (three different commemoratives) and full postmarks from being mailed in 2000. There is a postal barcode imprint on bottom reverse, and a little ink smudging on the front. Grade: 3

    Code: 40500015

    Price: $14.00

    Bangkok, Royal Barges (Thailand)
  • Bangkok, Emerald Buddha

The cost of this card is not so much driven by the photo, which is nice enough, but by the extraordinary stamp of a barge commemorating the King’s Golden Jubilee. The card was mailed in 1997, and has that stamp (which is more than 4-3/4″ long), a full postmark, and the retailer’s original card price on the reverse (Grade: 2, $8).  Another mailed card is also available, from 1993, with three less elaborate stamps (Grade: 2, $6).  (We must verify availability)

    Code: 40500016

    Price: $6.00

  • Royal Family (Thailand)

This unused item is the correct size and shape to be a postcard, and was bought along with other postcards, but has no identifying marks on the reverse other than what looks like the tiny icon of a dragon’s head.  However we recognise the subject of the card to be the immediate family of Rama IX, Thailand’s king at the time, and this looks to be many years ago.  Grade: 1

  • 50th Anniversary Celebrations – 4th Series (Maximum Cards)(set of five) (Thailand)

The crowning glory (pun intended, disrespect not intended) of our various stock of 50th Anniversary unused maximum cards of King Bhumibol’s accession to the throne.  This is the 4th series, issued in June 1996 (Thai 2539), and the five cards have minor postmark ink transfer on the back from having been stacked during processing.  We do not consider this to be a defect.  Though you can’t see it well in the scan, the card with the airplane has a holographic image of the King on the stamp.  Four of the five cards appear in the scan.  Two sets are available.  Grades: 1

To be precise, this couch of King Tut represents Goddess Hathor 18th Dynasty and is in the Egyptian Museum. But the card is not that old. It was mailed in 1976, and while the senders were in Cairo, they had to use a mail pouch service so it has a USA stamp and postmark. Serrated edges, and some postal markings on the front.  Grade: 4
