    Price: $1.00

Hot Springs, Wind Cave Nat. Park, calcite

  • Bad Lands (for Wall Drug)

When we were younger, Wall Drug was, and possibly still is, an exotic and remote destination. They issued their own cards, like this unused one from the late 1960s, by Dexter Press (69174-B). A little bit of aging on reverse but still: Grade: 1

    Code: 10142004

    Price: $4.00

    Bad Lands (for Wall Drug)
  • Black Hills, Wind Cave stalactites

A Dexter Press card (53028-B) from the late 1960s, unused but with a small stain on reverse. One would hope this is a timeless view of this part of the Black Hills–but time will tell. Won’t it? Grade: 3

    Price: $2.50

    Black Hills, Wind Cave stalactites
  • Wall Drug, then and now

  • Greetings from South Dakota

Three of these unused cards are available. The reverse is interesting, heavily coloured with a faded version of the front, and with two different built-in barcodes apparently giving the vendor a choice of classification. Well, we do the same thing, but without the barcodes. Grades: 1

Black Hills, “Switch Back” on Needles Road, State Park
  • Vermillion, First School House in South Dakota

This card is very old, and looks it.  Mailed in 1910, the stamp and long upside-down message are there, along with the postmark.  Exceptionally, we repeat an excerpt from plaintalk dot net here:  “The first permanent schoolhouse in Dakota Territory was constructed in late 1864. By … 1880, the school had outserved its usefulness and became a private residence for a family. It was later used as a paintshop, and during the latter part of 1881, according to newspaper accounts, the building was torn down and its logs transported to the country.”  We just found that very interesting.  Grade: 3

    Price: $4.00
