Luanda at night, on a Jomar card not postally used but with some identifying text written on the back. Grade: 4
-
Coffee
It’s not really intuitive which end is up on this Elmar card, but we’ve made our best guess. Not postally used, and with a 1984 message on the back. Grade: 4
-
Lubango, Jardim (Garden)
This Elmar card has a 1983 message written on the back, but wasn’t postally used. Grade: 4
-
Wellwitcha
This may look like a dead plant, but far from it. Welwitschia (the spelling Wikipedia assigns) is endemic to the Namib Desert of Namibia and Angola; it has only two actual leaves, and that same Wikipedia entry says any given plant can live for more than 1000 years. That’s not a typo! The Jomar card is not postally used and has a short message inked on the reverse. Grade: 3
-
Pungo-ua-Ndongo
We like to double-check, so we did the search, and found that Wikipedia refers to this as Pungo Andongo, which refers to the stones, to a city, and to a fortress. This old Jomar card, like others we have, was not postally used but has messages on the reverse, and an abrasion. Grade: 4.
-
Uma praia de Luanda
Fading card whose authenticity conveys so much atmosphere. In 1982, someone wrote identifying information on the back. Grade: 4
-
Malange, Quedas de Kalandula
Wikipedia advises that “Kalandula Falls are waterfalls in the municipality of Kalandula, Malanje Province, Angola. On the Lucala River, the falls are 105 meters high and 400 meters wide. They are one of the largest waterfalls by volume in Africa.” You might have known this already, but we’re always learning. Elmar card, not postally used, with some short identifying information written on the back. Grade: 3
-
Fenda da Tundavalla, P. Huila
Unused Jomar card, aging and with one small corner abrasion. Grade: 3
-
Welwitchia Mirabilis
You might refer back to our entry 20402011 for information about this plant, which despite its appearance is very much alive, and has been most likely longer than either you or us. The Elmar card has a long message written on the back. Grade: 4
-
Ilha de Luanda, Vista
Elmar card, older, with messages on the back — not postally used. Grade: 4
-
Luanda, buildings in city centre
The photo is faded but clean; the reverse is a mess of writing and water stains and age. Grade: 5
-
Luanda, Hotel Continental
Nowhere on this postally unused card does it show the name of the hotel, but quick searching (there aren’t that many options in Luanda) showed that this is Hotel Continental, whose online reviews are “OK” but we’ll never know first-hand. The Elmar card is aging and has a brief inscription written into the address area. Grade: 3
-
Luanda, bay view
Uncaptioned old card with some writing on the back. We know it’s Luanda from the publisher’s attribution. Grade: 4
-
Luanda, Carnaval da Victoria de 1981
Not postally used, this INALD card has some explanatory notes (in Portuguese) on the back. Grade: 4
-
Belezas e Costumes de Angola – woman and baby
It would have been nice if Elmar and the others had numbered their old cards. This one, not postally used, has a handwritten Portuguese explanation on the back. Grade: 4
-
People
Uncaptioned and not postally used, this dark Jomar card has its Luanda attribution and a written explanation on the back. Grade: 4

ELMAR card in a condition similar to others: not postally mailed, and with a message on the back. Grade: 4
-
Luanda, bay view
A faded, aged, old Elmar card with a bit of writing on the back. Honestly best if you just want an authentic “value” postcard of Angola. Grade: 4
-
Nova Lisboa, Avenida 5 de Outubro
Unused, unattributed, heavily aged but otherwise clean old postcard with caption. Grade: 2
-
Baia de Luanda
Edicoes DEPPI card, not postally used, heavily aged, with writing and a Brazilian address on the back. Grade: 4
-
(Kalandula) Falls
We put the header in brackets because the old ELMAR postcard is not captioned, but this is what those Falls are, one of the largest waterfalls by volume in Africa. Some short writing in the address area. Grade: 3-
-
Praia de Luanda
Unattributed card, not postally used and with messages on the reverse. Grade: 4
-
Luanda, night view of bay
No special caption, but with a Luanda attribution for this Jomar card. Not postally used either, and with message and name on the back. Grade: 4

-
Luanda, aerial night view
No caption, but this Jomar card has its Luanda attribution. The card was not used postally, and has written note on the back. Grade: 4
-
Luanda, bay
Compare with our entry 20402006, which is an Elmar card; but this one is a Jomar card. Same picture. (Are they the same company?) Anyway, again, not postally used and with a message greeting in the address area. Grade: 4
-
Vista do Bom Jesus
Elmar card, not postally used, with handwriting covering the reverse. Grade: 4
-
Luanda, Vista parcial, and Hotel Panorama
Despite its prominent status and location, the Panorama is now permanently closed. Whether the building is still there or not, we don’t know, but apparently the hotel (from the 1970s) didn’t close a minute too soon. The postcard was not mailed, but has a message covering the reverse. Grade: 4
-
Rio Bengo – Funda
Unused, older card. Grade: 1
-
Luanda, Views of the town
Unmailed ELMAR card #39, with a short greeting written on the back. Grade: 4
-
