Lake Nakuru, flamingos
At one time (the 1960s, when this unused card was first bought), the flamingos on Lake Nakuru were one of the world’s great natural marvels. We are afraid to go back and look. Grade: 1
-
Crested crane
These birds used to float down awkwardly and land on our lawn. Made quite a change from sparrows and starlings. Two of these cards are available. One was mailed in 1967, has a stamp and partial postmark (Grade: 2, $5). The other is unused (Grade: 1, $4).

Abaluhya Tribe
Mailed from Tanzania in 1971, to Austria, with a message that looks like it was written in shorthand. Stamp and postmark are there on this John Hinde postcard, along with a bilingual EAA airmail label. Please note that we assign this card to Kenya because that’s where the Luhyas live. Grade: 3
-

-
Chuka Dancers
The clear postmark over two different stamps doesn’t give a date, but we’re guessing early 1980s or late 1970s. Grade: 1
-
Cheetah
At the rate things are going, the only way many people will ever be able to see a cheetah is in a zoo or on a postcard. We hope not. This card was mailed in 1992, with two stamps and a little bit of a postmark. Grade: 1
-
Lake Naivasha
A view of the lake from Crescent Island. Unused. Grade: 1
-
Mt. Kenya
Mysterious in more than one way, this old card is unused but has some abrasions on the back and a brown stain at upper reverse that could be mistaken for a printed logo, but we believe it is a drop of tea or coffee. Leaving that aside, Mt. Kenya itself is not identified, but the only caption is “Club Logo” and the card’s own reference number is MKSC 2. So we know the Sapra card was issued by the Mount Kenya Safari Club in Nanyuki (now Fairmont Mount Kenya) and that’s the club in reference. Grade: 3
