Showing 121–160 of 986 postcards

  • The Curiosity Shop

This card was mailed, has its stamp and full postmark. We’re not sure whether the postmark’s 6.11.20 means it was sent in the 20th year of the Japanese Emporer’s reign, or in 1920, but if you’ve read this far, we know it’s something you will know. There is a full message, and address, in Japanese. Grade: 1

    Code: 20307120

    Price: $12.00

    The Curiosity Shop
  • Dokugunno Giho

We’re thinking the Japanese caption reveals some secrets because the western one tells us nothing. Google has no entries for Dokugunno, and if you enter Giho you get something with a totally different direction. (Try it and see!) The card is unused and very heavily aged, but undamaged and unquestionably a curiosity. Grade: 3

    Code: 20307121

    Price: $11.00

  • Shanghai, Hongkew Market

Unused card issued by Toyo Murakami Art and Curios, Palace Hotel Building, Shanghai. The sepia tone adds glamour to the congested and busy market scene. Album indents on corners are noticeable. Grade: 3

    Price: $12.00

  • Yinchuan, Imperial Tombs of Xixia

Published by Foreign Languages Press in Beijing, in the 1980s or earlier, this card was mailed from Beijing in 1991, and has three stamps, two of which are magnificently large and scenic; two full postmarks; and a bilingual red par avion chop as well. This card would be a prize for your collection.  Grade: 2

    Code: 20307124

    Price: $9.00

    Yinchuan, Imperial Tombs of Xixia
  • Sampan

We know it’s a sampan, and someone long aso also wrote “sampan” in Japanese on the back of this otherwise uncaptioned real-photo card. It doesn’t indicate that the setting is China but we believe that to be the case. Grade: 2

    Code: 20307125

    Price: $5.00

    Sampan
  • Bound feet (photograph)

This is not a postcard. It’s an original photo, 3″ x 4-3/8″, of a close-up of a woman’s bound feet. Her face can be seen blurred in the background. It’s been in an album, and on the reverse is a fading round blue “chop” dated either 1911 or the 11th year of the Japanese Emperor’s reign, we’re not sure which. And no, we’re not even certain if this photo was taken in PRC or in Hong Kong.  Ungraded.

    Code: 20307126

    Price: $59.00

    Code: 20307127

    Price: $4.00

    Old book
  • Japanese club in Chinese garden

We need to verify where this is, and would change this description if we ever found out, which now seems unlikely. Meanwhile, it’s an unused card. Grade: 2

    Price: $2.00

    Japanese club in Chinese garden

  • Harbin, Zhong Yang Street centenary (folio)

This is a folio of eight unused cards of Harbin’s main street. The cardboard wrap has a wonderful little poem in English and Chinese, commemorating the folio itself. The folio (and therefore the cards) was new in the 1990s but the photos are old pictures as main street used to be–not all of it 100 years ago. Plus, each card has 40 fen postage pre-printed on it. So now we tell you the cards were issued by the Ministry of Information. Grade: 1

    Code: 20307135

    Price: $19.00

  • Guangzhou, skyline

Even in the years since this card was mailed (1996), Guangzhou has changed so much–all for the better, we should add–so this is a great contemporary yet historical artifact. Card has three different stamps, two full postmarks, and a Postal Service bar code on bottom reverse. Grade: 3

    Code: 20307146

    Price: $6.00

  • Scenery of China (folio)

  • Beijing, White Dagoba

The Beihai Park (Chinese: 北海公园; Pinyin: BÄ›ihÇŽi Gōngyuán) is an imperial garden northwest of the Forbidden City in Beijing. We thank Wikipedia for this. And the White Dagoba is there. Card was mailed in 1988 with two stamps and most of a postmark and a tale of tourism gone wrong. Grade: 2

    Code: 20307149

    Price: $4.00

    Beijing, White Dagoba
  • Fushun, Third Power House

We like to call these “specialty cards” because unless you specialise in power facilities or utilities–and we know lots of you out there do just that–the antique Chinese postcard itself won’t be winning any beauty contests. The artists did a nice trick with fog, though. Unused card with some album indents on the corners. Grade: 2

    Code: 20307153

    Price: $6.00

    Fushun, Third Power House
  • Hongkew, Recreation Ground

Unused card and because it’s mostly white, you can see faint album indent marks on the corners. You might also want a good sense of history to know that this was where “the late General Baron Yoshinori Shirakawa was fatally bombed in 1932.” Grade: 2

    Code: 20307154

    Price: $8.00

    Hongkew, Recreation Ground
  • Beijing, Rostrum of Tienanmen

    Code: 20307157

    Price: $5.00

    Great Wall
  • Yearning Resort

When you visit this sprawling resort in southern China, you get a large ticket whose perforated portions are collected the further in you go, leaving you with pre-stamped postcards with maps filling the message space, but room for address. It sounds more complicated than it is. Two of these are available. Grades: 1

    Code: 20307159

    Price: $6.00

    Yearning Resort
  • Classic Chinese film posters (set)

We’re not certain how many cards are in this (unused) set because the original plastic wrapping, while a bit beaten up on the outside, has not been opened. So the cards should be in as-new condition. Printed in Hong Kong, we think there must be some cinematic treasures inside. Grade: 1

    Code: 20307160

    Price: $12.00

    Classic Chinese film posters (set)
  • Fujian, Tou Lou (set of 20)

At less than $1 per card, these are tremendous values. The set, called “Fujian Classic Earth Buildings”, is unused and in the original plastic shrink wrap. The cards depict the extraordinary round communal dwelling units (Tou Lou) of Fujian Province. Grade: 1

    Code: 20307161

    Price: $18.00

Fujian, Tou Lou (set of 20)
  • Dalian, Furama Hotel

Five cards are available, apparently issued or at least sanctioned by the Shanghai Posts and Telecommunications Administration–not sure why, as Dalian is quite far from Shanghai.  Four are unused, and these show a misprint near the stamp area: “the Pelple’s Republic of China” (Grades: 1, $4).  The fifth was mailed in 1997 with three stamps and two complete postmarks, but those stamps cover the misprint (Grade: 1, $6).

    Code: 20307163

    Price: $4.00

    Dalian, Furama Hotel
  • Beijing, Jianguo Hotel
