Malay House
Yes, there was a time Singapore looked like this … as reflected on this very old, undivided back, unused, real-photo postcard. Grade: 1
-
Suburb, carts
Two of these real photo cards of bullock carts are available. Same negative, but printed at different times so one is more B&W and the other almost sepia. Both have been in albums that left minor diagonal corner indents. The “sepia” card is unused (Grade: 2, $14) while the true B&W card has an extensive message in Japanese on reverse but was not postally mailed (Grade: 4, $12). Genuinely vintage Singapore postcards.
-
Alkaff Garden
Real photo card, never mailed, but being in an album left it with diagonal corner indentations. Aged but otherwise unmarked reverse. Grade: 3
-
Alkaff Garden
Nice view of this early urban retreat. Real photo card, unused, minor corner indents from having been in an album. Reverse is heavily aged but otherwise undamaged. Grade: 2
-
Singapore River
Can’t say it was a quieter time–look at all the boats. Unused B&W card, with index number 431757, and with caption at bottom front, minor corner creasing but otherwise undamaged. Grade: 2
-
Johnson’s Pier
Historic but somewhat dark card, a line through caption on bottom front, and the reverse with glue marks from having been attached to something. There is also a large Chinese or Japanese rubber stamp with a date indication–may be 1920, but if you read either language you will know for sure. Grade: 4
-
Government House
Continental Stamp Company card 1041, unused, aged, but unmarked and quite nice. Grade: 1
-
Harbour
This real photo card has faded significantly, but doing so quite in character with the scene it portrays. Remnants of some red Chinese or Japanese “chop” appear on upper front; reverse is unmarked. Grade: 4
-
Botanical Gardens
Real photo, unused card with index number 9145 and very minor corner abrasions. Aging but otherwise unmarked reverse. Fading a bit. Grade: 3
-
Botanical Gardens
Wilson & Co. take on an (overly) popular theme for early Singapore postcards. More reminiscent of French impressionism perhaps, but more valuable for it. Undamaged reverse. Grade: 1
-
Singapore River
Never-mailed Malaya antique postcard, B&W, with minor corner abrasions. Reverse has three stains but these are not visible on the front. Grade: 3
-
Singapore-Johore Causeway
More useful as historical record than as fine art, this real photo B&W card was never mailed. It has barely visible corner indents from being in an album, and also minor corner abrasions. Reverse has pencilled indication of the subject, also a red index number and further Japanese writing. Grade: 4
-
Government House
Very old card, unused. Red caption on bottom front. Aged but undamaged. Grade: 2

-
Bukit Timah reservoir
Continental Stamp Co. card 1009, not postally used but has extensive message on back, written in Japanese. The card was probably sent in an envelope. Front left corner is significantly creased; edges are abraded. Grade: 5

Malay girl
The pose could be 100 years ago or yesterday, but the unused Malaya B&W card with someone’s index number 431741 is old and in nice condition. Tiny corner curling; unmarked. Grade: 2
-
Malay girls
Could be straight from an old National Geographic, except of course it isn’t. Old unused B&W card with an index number 431744, very minor edge abrasions, otherwise OK. Grade: 2
-
Singapore Road and Rechor (sic) Road
Three of these are available. Two have a typo (Rechor) and one is correct (Rochor). All are unused, with multiple languages printed on reverse. Cards have definitely aged but still offer a clear view back into a far-distant life. Grades: 2
-
Mosque
B&W unused card with index number 433664, had been in album but corner indentations are almost invisible. Unmarked otherwise. Grade: 2
-
Sea Shore
One perforated edge indicates this Malaya vintage B&W postcard with index number 436001 had been part of a set. Unused, it is a bit faded/aged but otherwise undamaged. Grade: 3
-
Suburb
Real T.I.C. photo, quite old, unused. Around the edges, small bits of the photo have chipped off but the main picture is intact and atmospheric. Reverse is aged. Grade: 3
-
View taken from sea
The “feel” of this Gevaert photo card is that you are there, in the boat, struggling to get the next amateurish shot. So realistic and so long ago. Tiny front lower corner abrasion; aged but unmarked reverse. Grade: 2
-
Singapore River
Of many shots of the river, this is our favourite. The clear B&W real Gevaert photo close-up would be great framed, and if you live in Singapore, how can you pass it up? You won’t find anything better on Orchard Road! Unused, unmarked. No collection of Singapore postcards should be without a view of the river. Grade: 1
-
Traveller trees
Real photo B&W card, unused, and had been in an album so there are small indents on each corner. These trees are exotic when you see them and equally exotic on a postcard. Aged but unmarked reverse. Grade: 3
-
City view
B&W real photo, Malaya postcard, very clear yet somewhat “darK” in its tone and also for its lack of people. Never mailed, aged, but otherwise undamaged. Grade: 2
-
Hindu Temple, South Bridge Road
Unused card 54 issued by Max H. Hilckes. It’s a bit aged and smudged on front and back, but no writing or other significant damage. Grade: 3
-
Malay mosque
Real photo card, unused, with almost invisible album indents across front corners but some marks are there on reverse. Grade: 2
-
Tanjong Katong
This card either was, or turned, a brilliant orange as though a huge fire was raging on the beach behind. Distinctive! Unused! Really aged! Grade: 3
-
Tanjong Katong
As popular a card topic as the traveller tree, and about as interesting. This B&W real photo was unused but has edge and corner abrasions and a distinctly aged reverse. It’s an antique postcard. Grade: 3
-
Scenery on the Singapore River
Max H. Hilckes postcard 142. Unused, generally undamaged, though being in an album has left diagonal fading on reverse corners. Grade: 2
-
Connaught Drive
Less-common real photo card of a very early time. Unused; insignificant pencil mark on reverse but very nice otherwise. Grade: 3
-
Singapore River
Normally aged old card, unused, without any special damage. It has an index number 431765. Grade: 2
-
Raffles Square
An old card of rickshaws that doesn’t take to scanning very well, but it’s in especially good condition. It has an index number 16928, from the unknown publisher. Unused B&W, we’d say less-than-normal aging. Nice addition to your collection of old Singapore postcards. Grade: 1
-
View from sea
B&W real photo with the one-word caption “Singapore” hidden in the water. Card was never mailed and has no folds, etc., but being in an album left faded marks diagonally across the front and back corners. Grade: 3
-
Traditional shophouses and skyscrapers
Recently in Singapore for the first time in awhile, we noticed two things about postcards: (1) they’re not everywhere, and (2) they’re relatively expensive compared with elsewhere in Asia. Nevertheless, we found a few. This one: unused, 4-1/2″ x 6-1/2″. Grade: 1
-
Typical Malayan View
Back when Singapore was Malaya, yes, this was a typical view. Two cards are available, and neither was ever mailed. On one, the reverse is heavily mottled and aged, and has a purple rubber stamp of two elephants; front is undamaged apart from some edge abrasions (Grade: 4, $16). The other is just generally better (Grade: 2, $18).
-
Queen’s Place
A very, very old view from the Malaya Straits Settlements that just seems to emphasize the gap between then and now. The card was never mailed and is aged but undamaged. Grade: 1
-
Reservoir Gardens
Unused old B&W real photo, not damaged, just undistinguished. Grade: 1
-
Farmer House
Blue-tinted card, unused, but card had been in an album that left diagonal marks on corners. Reverse is aged but otherwise undamaged. Grade: 3
-
Stamford Road
This antique postcard manages to make Singapore look like rural England. Impressive feat! Unused, undamaged, nice. Grade: 1
