Not too many elephants wander the streets of Singapore now. This early 20th century B&W card is unused and in superb condition. Grade: 1

Very old card, B&W real photo, never mailed. Front has minor edge abrasions, and the photo itself has faded spots at top. Reverse is aged but otherwise unmarked. Grade: 3

Tanjong Katong, Sea View Hotel
This Continental Stamp Company 1028 card has seen hard times. Front has significant edge abrasions and corner creasing. There is a small printed caption at bottom that won’t show up in the scan. Card was mailed in 1914; postmark is intact but stamp is missing. Was mailed to Formosa and message is in Japanese. Grade: 4

Two of these unmailed, real photo cards are available. One is unmarked, but aged (Grade: 2, $14); the other has “Singapore” lightly inked on upper left reverse (Grade: 3, $12).

This R. Ian Lloyd Colorscans card AT105 was mailed from Malaysia in 1990. It has a Sabah stamp but not fully legible postmark. Reverse has aged significantly but front is really very good–and this skyline has changed since then. Grade: 3

Mailed in Malaysia in 1990, this card AT134 has a Selangor stamp and partly legible postmark. Very minor postal battering, otherwise OK. Grade: 3

Two cards are available. One was mailed in Malaysia in 1986, and has Johor stamp and legible postmark. Serrated edges, excellent condition front and back (Grade: 3, $6). The other was also mailed in Malaysia, in 1990, with Sarawak stamp and partial postmark; also a bit of ink smudge on front (Grade: 3, $5).

Singaporean postcards rarely stray too far from the river. Two of these cards, with serrated edges, are available. One is unused, as-new (Grade: 1, $5). The other was mailed in 1995 with three large stamps and mostly readable postmark, but also with indistinct orange postal barcoding across the front (Grade: 2, $7).

This card perfectly represents, in every way, many people’s perception of modern-day Singapore. Apart from that, the card was mailed in 1999 and has four large stamps with a mostly readable postmark. Grade: 1

Airport Duty-Free Emporium
Though they mean the Singapore airport, the card was mailed from Malaysia in 1986 and has a stamp plus full Kuala Lumpur postmark. It also has significant postmark smudging on the front. But it’s a nice variety card. Grade: 4

Chinatown by Night
At one point, Singapore was doing its best to excise any trace of history or life in places like this card shows. Happily, common sense kicked in. Unused Associated Marketing Agency card A25 with serrated edges. Grade: 1

Supreme Court and City Hall (3D)
Wonder Co. of Tokyo seemed to make many of Asia’s 3D lenticular image cards in the 1970s-80s. Maybe they still do? Distributed by Jany Batcha Co. JS-7, this was mailed from Singapore in 1989 with two different stamps and readable postmark, along with blue bilingual airmail sticker affixed. Grade: 1

Durian stall
People will sit around and stare at a durian for hours, trying to decide if it’s “good” or not. The one thing you can’t really do is pinch or squeeze it … and definitely by western standards “good” is a relative term! Unused SW Singapore card S8613, aging yet evocative. Grade: 2

Paintings from visual artist Rajinder Singh’s FACES collection, presented by The Universal, Wine Bar and Restaurant. The scan cuts the restaurant’s URL off the bottom front, but it’s there. Not sure if the restaurant still is, or not. Unused card from 2007. Grade: 1
