Kinmen, alley with guardian lion
Continuing the series as described in 20325460. We have a translation of the legend at the top of the stairs: “Don’t forget national humiliation in time of peace and security and to recover the lost territory”. For apolitical reasons of our own, we’ll reserve comment. Grade: 1
-

We will call him that, anyway. Continuing the series of unused cards that began with 20325460. Two of these are available. Grades: 1

Jiufen, church
Good Taiwanese friend Lin-Lee who supplied this and other unused 4-1/8″ x 8-3/8″ cards in this short series describes this as “St. Jean Baptiste Roman Catholic Church nearby Jiufen”. But we were not able to locate anything religious with that name, or even by translating it, in the area. If you can help us fix this, please let us know. Or, just buy the card and it won’t be a problem any more. Grade: 1
-
Jiufen, partial town view
Unused 4-1/8″ x 8-3/8″ card. Grade: 1

Ancient Chinese Paintings – 24 Solar Terms (Autumn) (Maximum Cards) (set of 6)
Our scan shows the cardboard cover and two of six maximum cards in this seasonal set issued by Chunghwa Post Co., Ltd. The other four cards are of a similar motif, and we are assuming because there are four seasons and six cards in this set (officially called “Maximum Cards of Ancient Chinese Paintings from the National Palace Museum Postage Stamps – 24 Solar Terms (Autumn)”) there are three other similar sets representing other seasons. Anyway, here’s Autumn. Grade: 1
-
Kaohsiung Medical University – fauna
Here’s a set of 12 unused cards from Kaohsiung Medical University. We’re not certain what prompted these, but all but one have Latin (scientific) names on the reverse, along of course with Chinese. Six show seashells; four show birds; one is an insect (the golden-spotted tiger beetle, to be exact), and one — it’s in the upper left of our scan, we have no idea what that is. A few of the cards have small stickers on the lower right reverse, possibly correcting an error made in the text of what also shows without stickers on the remaining cards. Having said all that, we have four sets available, all Grade: 1
-
Ancient Chinese Paintings – 24 Solar Terms (Winter) (Maximum Cards) (set of 6)
See our description for entry 20325474. Here comes Winter! This time we show you four of the six cards in the set, issued in 2022. Grade: 1
-
Taipei, C.K.S. Memorial Hall
C.K.S. being Chiang Kai-shek, former President of the Republic of China. This card was mailed in 1988 with two stamps, and postmark. Grade: 1
-
Taipei, Rong Shing Gardens
It is extraordinarily unusual to enter a proper name into Google and get zero result. That’s what happened here. The card (mailed we think in the 1980s, with stamp and indistinct postmark) spells it as Rong Shing. More searching came up with this: “Rongxing Garden Park (traditional Chinese: 榮星花園公園; simplified Chinese: 荣星花园公园) (also called Rongxing Garden or Rongxing Park) is an urban park in Zhongshan District, built as a private garden by Koo family in 1968. … The park is the first European landscape garden in Taipei, which consists of flowers, wetlands, lotus ponds and children’s playground. It spans an area of 6.5 hectares.” Grade: 1
-
Taipei, Corridor of Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Park
Mailed in 1990 with two stamps, postmark, and trilingual airmail label. By the way, as best we can, we follow spelling of names just as they are on each card — so you may spot differences. Grade: 1
-
The Cliff of E.W. Cross Islan (sic) Highway
Mailed perhaps in the 1980s, with stamp and partly readable but indistinct postmark. Grade: 1
-
Eternal Spring Shrine and Its Waterfall
Mailed in 1988 with stamp and full postmark. Grade: 1
-
Ning An Suspension Bridge
We think this card was mailed in the late 1980s — stamp is there but the postmark is hard to read. Grade: 1
-
Mt. Ta-Tun from Yangming Park
Yangming Park is north of Taipei, about 17 km from the city center. Because the park was covered with grass, it was originally called “Grass Mountain.” After the Japanese era, in order to commemorate Ming Dynasty scholar Wang Yangming, Grass Mountain was renamed Yangmingshan in 1950. Yangming Park has an area of 107 hectares and is located mainly on Mt. Datun, and, once again, spellings change. Mailed in 1979, the card has stamp, faint postmark, and a thumbtack hole. Grade: 4
-
Ancient Chinese Paintings – 24 Solar Terms (Summer) (Maximum Cards) (set of 6)
See our description for entry 20325474. Here comes Summer, and for this we show you the front cover and one of the cards in the set, issued in May, 2023. These are the Pre-cancelled, Chinese version. Grade: 1
-
Qianlong reign (Maximum cards) (set of 2)
English and Chinese captions identify these items from the National Palace Museum as “Revolving vase with swimming fish in cobalt blue glaze” and “Coupled vase with flower-and-bird panels in yangcai painted enamels”. Though we can’t interpret those clear postmarks, the original cellowrap has more technical information. Grade: 1
-
Myriad Butterflies (Yu Sheng) (Maximum cards) (set of 2)
Butterflies in Qingyu Province, on (different) handscrolls called “Myriad Butterflies” produced by Yu Sheng during the Qing Dynasty. Set of two maximum cards, postmarked as shown and with more technical information on the original cellowrap. Grade: 1
-
Ancient Chinese Paintings – 24 Solar Terms (Spring) (Maximum Cards) (set of 6)
You might want to see our entry 20325474 and others near that, for the other three seasons. This set of six maximum cards — the scan shows two of those, plus the cover — was issued on 5 February 2023. It’s a nice and comprehensive series of artworks, and if all four seasons are still available and you want them all, we’ll offer a discount. Grade: 1
