Berati, St. Michael’s Church
The legend on the front of this unused card (2400 vjet qytet) means “a city for 2400 years.” The caption dates St. Michael’s as 13th-14th century, so it’s still a newcomer. This SHB card is also old, though not that far back. Grade: 1
-
Rrëshen, Monument of the Four Heroines (of Mirdita)
Sculptors responsible for this monument include Dh. Gogollari, F. Dushku, and Perikli Çuli, in 1971. It’s an older, unused card and we understand the monument is no longer there. Grade: 1
-
Tirana, National Arts Gallery, “Au chantier de la lumiere” (D. Jukniu)
Unused, older Albturist card, captioned only in French. Slight smudging on the reverse. Grade: 2
-
View of the northern Albania
Unused 1986 Shtepia Botuese “8 Nentori” card. (The publisher has an interesting story of its own.) Anyway, this looks a lot like the road to Theth. Average handling. Grade: 2
-
Tirana, The Big Park
Unused, older SHB 8 Nentori card. Grade: 1
-
Bags: Saranda, Shkodra, Durrës
Three styles of customary bags on an unused 1986 SHB 8 Nentori card that has been heavily handled and a bit scuffed. Grade: 3
-
Kavaj, multiple
The front of this unused card is OK except for an abrasion at extreme lower left. But the reverse is awful, having been pasted into an album and then badly peeled off. But it is an authentic old postcard. Grade: 5
-
Skanderbeg’s Bust
This 1989 card from SHB in Tirana doesn’t say where the bust is. As for the card, it’s not postally used but the reverse is covered in a 1990 New Year’s greeting. Grade: 4
-
Gezuar Uitin e Ri (Happy New Year)
This card had been mailed, but the stamp is long gone. Grade: 5
-
Elbasan, Hotel Turizmi
One online source says this converted to Hotel Skampa; another source says no, the Skampa is in Durres and not Elbasan. Maybe both are correct but it wouldn’t be Turizmi any more in any event. The card is in bad condition, heavily handled, stained, and with a 1979 greeting. But it’s unquestionably an authentic old postcard. Grade: 5
-
Pamje nga (view from) Tirana
One of our favourite Albanian postcards, not because it is in good condition (it’s not) but because it oozes character and mystery. Printed in 1977, it has a 1978 New Year’s greeting and had been mailed — the stamp is long gone. Any overview of Tirana now, or even tomorrow, will look a lot different from this. We can say this about any city’s scene, but we’re saying it here and now. Grade: 5
-
Durresit, Port
The front of this old card is faded, but clear enough. The reverse, not as good: a 1974 New Year’s greeting, many stains, missing stamp, and so on. Maybe it should be grade 5 but because of the distinctive photo, we assign Grade: 4
-
Durres, Hotel Butrinti
This 1983 card was mailed as a New Year’s greeting for 1984, but the stamp is long gone. By the way, the only Hotel Butrinti we can find now is in Saranda, and it’s really good. Just not the same. Grade: 5
-
Vlore, view
Here’s a 1982 card, not postally used but with a New Year’s greeting clearly covering much of the reverse. The interesting thing is, if you want a window into life at the time, and if you don’t speak Albanian, you can put this into Google Translate and see what comes out the other end. Grade: 4
-
Berati, dual view
Yet another Albanian city with an astonishingly long and colorful geopolitical and cultural history. This ARBA card 47 is unused but quite heavily handled. Grade: 4
-
View of Butrint
Butrint postcards don’t always show the changes taking place in the area right around the park. This unused 1984 card came before (most) people, and UNESCO, did. Grade: 1
-
Berati, multiple views
Unused RTS card 17190. Grade: 1
-
Saranda beach
The blur is on the card itself, not the scan. Unused Albturist card from 1991. Grade: 2
-
Pamje nga (view from) Thethi
Unused, aging 1982 Shtepia Botuese “8 Nentori” card. Grade: 2
-
View of Tirana
Two of these unused cards are available, from different print runs. One–in this scan–has a clear photo (Grade: 1, $4), and the other’s photo is blurry (Grade: 3, $2).
-
View of Saranda
Unused 1989 card from Shtepia Botuese “8 Nentori”. Grade: 1
-
Flowers
Not postally used, this 1986 card has a New Year’s greeting written on the back. Grade: 4
-
Pamje nga Veriu (View from the North)
Card from 1980, not postally used but with a 1982 New Year’s greeting and some extra pencilled calculations on the reverse. Grade: 4
-
View of Durrës
SHB card dated 1984, unused. (Belated thanks to them for putting the date on most of their postcards. It really helps us.) Grade: 1
-
Gjirokastra, “View of the Museum”
Not postally used, but New Years greetings for 1988 fill the messy reverse of this card. Grade: 4
-
Gjirokastra, gallery in the city’s castle
A 1978 card mailed in 1981, with parts of the postmarks there but no stamp. Not in very good condition, but just good enough to be Grade: 4
-
Berat, Democratic Government residence
This 1981 card, with an (unposted) 1988 New Year’s greeting, is replete with symbolism, from the caption straight through to the humorous message (in Albanian). Somehow we were pleased to see that humour poke through. Grade: 4
-
Gjirokaster, Banese (characteristic home)
The 1975 card had been mailed, but the stamp is gone. Only the front is worth noting. Grade: 4
-
“The Renaissance Fighters” (Naxhi Bakalli)
Not postally used, a 1982 SHB card with extensive message on the reverse. Bakalli (the artist) has a rich history of his own, as Google will reveal. Grade: 4
-
View of Gjirokastra
SHB card dated 1989, unmailed but with a greeting on the reverse along with some stains. The value is the front of the card, an old view of this emerging tourist haven. Grade: 4
-
Scenery in the Albanian Alps
Well, one Alp. Unused. Grade: 1
-
View of Gjirokastra (Qafa e Pazarit)
Unused NK card. Out of curiosity, we entered “Qafa e Pazarit” (as it appears in the bilingual caption) into Google Translate, and it comes back as “The neck of the bargain.” We doubt that was the intended meaning of the caption’s writer. Grade: 1
-
Berati, three views
As with many of our other cards, this one is dated 1983, was not postally used, and has a 1984 New Year’s greeting on the reverse. With some effort, you can translate the (Albanian) message, and given the circumstances of the era, these messages — banal as they might seem — can be interesting. Grade: 4
-
The circus of Tirana
A “whole” card, meaning it has a stamp and two postmarks along with a New Year’s greeting for 1985. The writer would not have known what was to happen in 1985 to change Albania forever. Grade: 1
-
Dandelions
When we found our first dandelion postcard (from a different country), we were pleasantly surprised — having grown up with this “weed” in all forms and then learning you can make drinkable wine from it. And now we have another. And so can you! Unused SHB 8 Nentori card from 1989. Grade: 1
-
Tirana, Archaeological Ethnographic Museum, Armes Illyriennes
Unused Albturist card, captioned in French. Some staining on the reverse. Grade: 3
-
Tirana, Archaeological Ethnographic Museum, petite tete
Unused Albturist card, captioned in French. Here is more detail: “Petite tete de jeune homme illyrien (cite d’Irma), Gramsh.” (Gramsh, a city in central Albania) Grade: 1
-
Ceiling centres
Unused, from 1987. Lots of handling. Grade: 2
-
Kruja, National Museum, mosaic
Unused SHB card, whose bilingual caption (at least the English part) reads like this: “The ‘Gjergj Kastrioti – Skanderbeg’ Naional Museum, Kruja ‘The Call’, mosaic by Gavril Priftuli and Nikolet Vasia”. Make of that what you will. Grade: 2
-
Pogradec, Fragment de mosaique de la basilique paleochretienne de Lin
Unused, slightly aging Albturist card. Grade: 1
