Snowy view
A nice card mailed in 2010 with stamp, blue bilingual Priority sticker, and full but obscured postmark. Grade: 1
-
Finlandia
Though the (mailed) card is beautiful, the stamp is also remarkable. Is that Braille? Grade: 1
-
Birdhouse in Winter
Mailed in 2010 with stamp and full postmark, along with Priority blue sticker affixed. Grade: 1
-
Poem
Mailed in 2010 with an elaborately coloured and glittered stamp, this seems to be a poem, and though we don’t speak Finnish, Google does. They translate it like this: “Thomas, a breath of wind. Song Lintunen Luoma. Let there be joy when You sit alone in the evening.” Computers aren’t quite there yet, but this must be close. Are you Finnish? Help! Grade: 1
-
Turku Cathedral
From 2010, mailed with an Aurora Borealis stamp and Priority airmail sticker affixed. Grade: 1
-

“Pohjoisen lintuja” in Finnish means “northern birds” (we think, thanks to Google) but we know this is a crane, and that the card was mailed in 2010 with a brilliant stamp, full postmark from Kuopio, and the address on an affixed label. Grade: 2
-
Northern Lights
The stamp on this mailed card is also one of Aurora borealis, and the writer took care to do that. There is a blue bilingual Priority label affixed, and an address label. Grade: 2
-

Mailed in 2010 with its stamp and blue Priority sticker affixed. Grade: 1
-
Helsinki, icebreakers
From 2010, a card with stamp, partial postmark, blue Priority sticker, and the address fully taped on. Grade: 3

Kvarken Archipelago
Finland deserves full marks for their postage stamps. This card, mailed but with no postmark, has an exceptionally clever stamp of a comic pumpkin. We will be very happy if someone lets us know the symbolism behind this! As for the card, mailed in 2010, it shows to no great advantage Finland’s first World Natural Heritage. Grade: 3
-
Multiple views
Beautiful if slightly bleak card that was mailed, with its stamp and Priority label, but no postmark. Grade: 3
-
Kokkola Karleby
Colourful stamp (but of what?), with mostly readable postmark. Grade: 1

Card from 2010, with stamp and most of the postmark. Is this a Moomin stamp? Not certain. Grade: 1
-
Muumi Pappa Moomin
Irregular-shaped card in the typical Moomin style, with stamp and blue Priority sticker attached. We’re not experts in Finnish, but the translation might be “Congratulations Paivansankarille” for which Google is no help because all the results are also in Finnish. Sigh. Grade: 1
-
Kuopio
Mailed in 2010, with two stamps, a blue bilingual Priority sticker, and special postmarks. Basically in perfect condition. Grade: 1

The message is also pasted into the appropriate area. Grade: 4
-
Sauna
The message on this 5-3/8″ x 5-3/4″ card, mailed in 2011 with stamp and Priority sticker but no legible postmark, kindly explains all about sauna protocol. To this we say: just come to Hong Kong in the summer and the sauna protocol explains itself! Grade: 1

Vapaa on vain umpihanki
Mailed from Helsinki in 2011 with stamp, postmark, and Priority label, the trilingual caption is cute. In English: “My Way.” In French: “Liberte.” But in Finnish, the caption translates as “Freedom is just a deep snowdrift.” Well, that’s what Google Translate tells us. Grade: 3

Rauma, greetings
“Terveiset Raumalta,” Greetings from Rauma, on a card mailed in 2011 with Priority sticker and a beautiful 3D stamp that unfortunately has not been postmarked. Were it not for that, the card would be grade 1, but by our standards it must then be Grade: 4

Mailed in 2011 with what might be a Formula One stamp, full Helsinki postmark, and bilingual Priority label affixed. Grade: 2
-
Helsinki, multiple views
From 2011, with two stamps but the postmark is too faint to see. We dream of the old days when this was still possible. Small abrasion on the front. Grade: 3
-
Sunset
As much sunset on the reverse as on the front. Mailed in 2011, this postcard has a stamp and too-faint postmark, and the Priority label. Grade: 1
-

Finland has some extraordinary stamps. One of them (of three, in total) is on the reverse of this card. None have been cancelled, so you can see clearly. Priority label also there. Grade (only because of no postmark): 4

Terveisia Espoosta (Greetings from Espoo)
Many of you probably know of various translation services available online. The one from Google is easy to use, and includes a “listen” function. We feel like moving to Finland just so we can hear this phrase repeated over and over. Wonderful! Like the card, mailed though with no postmark, so we must assign it as Grade: 3
