Unused Iris/Mexichrome card 349 (we think) with serrated edges and the reverse caption largely blotted out by a massive purple rubber stamp (placed pre-original sale) saying “PARIS est toujours PARIS, passez-y vos vacances:” which is all well and good but blotting out the original caption sort of defeats the purpose, wouldn’t you think? Paris, Jardin du Luxembourg – Le Senat
Almost certainly one of the oldest postcards we have in stock. This was mailed in November, 1900. Two stamps are there along with four postmarks: three from Paris and one from Riesa, which is either the town in Germany or someplace else we can’t identify. This old card has some battering and battle scars but is intact, clear, and superbly ancient. Grade: 2
-
Paris, Place de la Concorde
Mailed in 1950 with stamp and full Grenoble postmark, the sepia card looks much older but is still in good condition. Grade: 3
-
Paris, Les Fontaines du Palais de Chaillot et la Tour Eiffel
What we can tell from this card, with serrated edges and mailed in 1955 using a postage meter, is that it was a special mailing from the Tower itself, complete with commemorative red medallion on the reverse (probably part of the postage meter) and a special non-postal stamp saying “Souvenir de la Tour Eiffel”. In other words, you only got this card if you went into the Eiffel Tower. Grade: 1
