Låtefoss
Låtefoss is a waterfall located in Ullensvang Municipality. The 165-metre (541 ft) tall waterfall is special in that it consists of two separate streams flowing down from lake Lotevatnet, and as they fall, they join in the middle of the waterfall, just before going under Norwegian National Road 13 built in 1867–69, making for a spectacular (and wet) view as one drives over the old, stone, six-arched bridge. That’s the scene. As for the card, it was mailed a few years ago with stamp, indistinct postmark, Prioritaire label, and pasted address label. Grade: 4

Dalen i Telemarken
In 1938, the postmark tells us, B mailed this card from Oslo to Clare in California. The stamp is long gone. However, as we sometimes do, we searched the card’s recipient and learned that — at that time — she was well-known. Maybe not so much now, but just that bit of history. Grade: 4

Askøy, the Bridge
Askøy is an island municipality including the main island of Askøy and the minor island of Herdla, bordering Alver to the northeast, Bergen to the southeast, and Øygarden to the west. It has one of the fastest growing populations in Norway due to an influx of new inhabitants from the Bergen, Midhordland and Nordhordland after the opening of the Askøy Bridge in 1992. (Herdla has a popular recreational area on the site of the disused German Herdla Airport from World War II.) This unused 4″ x 8″ card features the 1,056.7 m. Bridge. Grade: 1

Strusshamn, houses and boat
Strusshamn is a village in the municipality of Askøy, one of the cultural centers of the municipality, and well-known for its long maritime traditions and history. Wooden buildings here date back to around 1800; the village was used in the 18th and 19th centuries as the quarantine harbour for Bergen. Strusshamn is connected to Bergen by the Askøy Bridge. Note that we don’t normally give background information for every town in the website, but this short series of cards came from a close friend of our close friend, and we want to acknowledge how sources like these were instrumental in building the site to what it is now. Strusshamn, Hauge Memorial
Hans Nielsen Hauge (1771 – 1824) was a Norwegian Lutheran lay minister, spiritual leader, business entrepreneur, social reformer and author. He led a noted Pietism revival known as the Haugean movement and is also considered to have been influential in the early industrialization of Norway. Not certain of his particular connection to Strusshamn unless, as the plaque suggests, he built a mill there in 1804. Unused card. Grade: 1

Brønnøysund
This laconic Wikipedia entry may not sound too enticing but the postcard sort of makes up for it. Says Wikipedia: “In recent years, Brønnøysund has managed to create a certain economic growth. Fjord Seafood originated here, as well as the largest limestone mine in Northern Europe and the highest foodstuff production in Northern Norway are examples of entrepreneurship and well-run economy in this somewhat prosperous region.” The card is made more desirable with a large stamp of a cruise ship (Hurtigruten line) and an onboard 2024 cancellation from ms Nordnorge stating “Crossed the Arctic Circle”. Trollstigen, The feeling of freedom!
Trollstigen (or trollstigvegen; English: The troll path) is a serpentine mountain road and pass in Rauma Municipality, part of Norwegian County Road 63. It is a popular tourist attraction due to its steep incline of 10% and eleven hairpin bends up a steep mountainside. During the top tourist season, about 2,500 vehicles pass daily. At the 700-metre (2,300 ft) plateau, viewing balconies overlook the bends and the Stigfossen waterfall. This man may be feeling the freedom, but the cold as well. Unused card. Grade: 1

Borgund, Stavkirke
Borgund Stave Church is a former parish church initially Catholic and later the Church of Norway in Lærdal Municipality. It was built around the year 1200 as the village church and belonged to Lærdal parish until 1868, when its religious functions were transferred to a “new” Borgund Church nearby. The old church was restored, conserved and turned into a museum, run by the Society for the Preservation of Ancient Norwegian Monuments, and classified as a triple-nave stave church of the Sogn-type. Its grounds contain Norway’s sole surviving stave-built free-standing bell tower. Unused postcard. Grade: 1
