  • Olympics gymnastic champions – Larisa Iordache

Google “Catena Romania” and you’ll learn this is, probably amongst other things, a large online pharmacy.   And we present here a short series of unused postcards celebrating various Romanian sports champions.  We’ve not done research on each of these individual gymnasts, though our source Tatiana explained their different events and backgrounds.  The cards’ designs indicate all were Olympians, and so they are; though as you will see if you read the next few entries, some of the named locations either never sponsored Olympics, or not in those years.  Anyway … this card, the first in the series, shows Lorisa Iordache.  Grade: 1

  • Bucharest, National Village Museum “Dimitrie Gusti,” Câmpulung Moldovenesc costume

Refer to earlier, similar entries about cards like these.  This unused one, of folkwear from Câmpulung Moldovenesc, the port of Bucovina, illustrates elaborate examples from the late 19th century.  Grade: 1

  • Bucharest, National Village Museum “Dimitrie Gusti,” Vrancea costume

Refer to earlier, similar entries about cards like these.  This unused one, of folkwear from Vrancea, shows an example from the late 19th century.  Our friend Tatiana has provided an explanation of the origin and construction of these outfits as richly complex as the items themselves.  Trust us, there’s a lot going into these.  Two cards are available.  Grades: 1

    Code: 20544060

    Price: $3.00

Bucharest, National Village Museum “Dimitrie Gusti,” Vrancea costume
  • Bucharest, National Village Museum “Dimitrie Gusti,” Oaș costume

As with other, similar cards in this series, this unused one shows early 20th-century folk costume examples, from Oaș, The Ossetian port.   Tataiana’s explanation of the history and evolution of these is phenomenal, and we can only imagine how critical such clothing and adornments were/are to the culture.  Worthy of a graduate seminar!  Two cards are available.  Grades: 1

    Code: 20544061

    Price: $3.00

Bucharest, National Village Museum “Dimitrie Gusti,” Oaș costume
  • Bucharest, Vila Minovici

More contemporary (2007) postcard of an old view of Vila Minovici, now a museum.  Brief history: “The Dr. Nicolae Minovici Museum was the first dedicated to folk art in Bucharest.  Inaugurated in 1906, “the national art museum” first functioned as a private institution. The Dr. Nicolae Minovici villa is one of the first neo-Romanian constructions in Bucharest, built between 1905 and 1906.”  Unused.  Grade: 1

  • Bucharest, Monumentul I.C. Brătianu

The monument of Ion C. Brătianu, Prime Minister of Romania several times over,  was designed by architect Petre Antonescu and made by the French sculptor Ernest Henri Dubois after winning an international competition organized in 1900.  It was inaugurated on May 18, 1903 at the intersection of Colței Boulevard (now IC Brătianu Boulevard) with King Carol I Boulevard, on the occasion of the 12th anniversary of the death of Brătianu . The monument was funded by public subscription.  We just felt like explaining this old view on a contemporary (2013) unused card from the Municipal Museum.  There’s more to the story, right up until now.  Curious?  Google.  Grade: 1

  • Bucharest, Hotel Bulevard

A photo from the good old days, on a reproduction card dated 2013 from Bucharest’s Municipal Museum.  If you go to Google, as we did, you’ll find the building (at least) is still there, and called “Grand Hôtel du Boulevard” (maybe) but you will come away not knowing much else about it.  Grade: 1

    Code: 20544069

    Price: $2.00

    Bucharest, Hotel Bulevard
  • Bucharest, Piața Palatului Regal

In front, Hotel Athénée Palace (now Athenee Palace Hilton; and, according to Wikipedia, a historic luxury hotel opened in 1914, arguably Europe’s most notorious den of spies in the years leading up to World War II, and only slightly less so during the Cold War.)  on this unused reproduction card issued in 2013 by Bucharest’s Municipal Museum.  Grade: 1

    Code: 20544070

    Price: $3.00

  • Postcards from Romania by Eugen Mihai (set of 10)

The ten glossy, unused cards in this set produced by Romanian military photographer Eugen Mihai are all shown on its paper cover.   Each postcard has a complete and informative bilingual (English/Romanian) caption and represents one or another of a variety of scenes around the country — including a fortress, IAR 99 Standard military jet trainers, TR-85 M1 battle tank, Bucharest’s Palace of Parliament, Castelui Peles (Sinaia), the training ship “Mircea”, night view from Bucharest’s North Railway Station, Horezu Monastery, The Gate of the Kiss, and Hunyadi Castle.  This great set came to us via our friend Tatiana, and — given the special circumstances of the cards’ production — if you read this and want to order directly from Mr. Mihai, we’ll tell you how to do that.  Or, of course, this set from us.  Grade: 1

    Code: 20544072

  • Bucharest, National Village Museum “Dimitrie Gusti”, Beiuș Costumes

Another unused card in the series of costumes at Bucharest’s National Village Museum.  This one shows an example from Beiuș, dating from the late 19th century.  Not incidentally, Beiuș is in Bihor County, near the Apuseni Mountains. The river Crișul Negru flows through, and the city administers a single village, Delani. Between the late 18th and early 20th centuries, Beiuș constituted one of the most important learning centres of the Romanian language in Crișana.  Grade: 1

  • Locomotiva Pasarea Maiastra

Sorry that our header misses the extra symbols but this is a fine postcard on both sides, though it does not qualify as a maximum card because (A) there’s no cancellation on the front, and (B) the stamp design is not a match.  Never mind all that, the card was mailed in 2021 with large stamp and sticker, and special postmark.  If you like unusual trains, this one’s for you.  Grade: 1

    Code: 20544082

    Price: $3.00

  • Aurelian Pană

Perhaps not too well-known outside of Romania, Aurelian Pană (1880-1951)  was a right-wing Romanian politician, Minister of Agriculture and Domains, and president of the agricultural union, killed during Communist persecution.  This unused, sturdy, high-quality postcard is almost like a pictorial C.V.  Grade: 1

  • Posta Romana, 155 Anniversary

How quaint of Posta Romana to issue its own special card for their 155th anniversary in 2017.  There seem to have been 5000 of these printed.  Too bad they all don’t have (the other) GPS trackers so we might know what happened to them along with all the other mail that disappears into their system.  Unused, Grade: 1

    Code: 20544088

    Price: $3.00

    Posta Romana, 155 Anniversary
  • People

We must be careful to describe this postcard accurately.  It’s not old.  It is unused.  The Muzeul National al Agriculturil took a very old undivided back card and reproduced it, warts and all, on both sides — leaving the printed reproduction of the stamp and partial postmark, but eliminating any address.  So it’s a recent card that looks old, with a faux stamp printed on the reverse.  Grade: 1

    Code: 20544089

    Price: $3.00
