Mailed internationally in 1980 with two stamps and full postmark, this Petley card survived that trip and many since then OK. Grade: 1

Smith-Southwestern card 1468, mailed from Denver in 1999 with a 55-cent stamp and partly legible postmark. The card has suffered a bit of battering but this just adds character, right? Grade: 3

Montezuma Castle National Monument
Card was made in 1987 and mailed in 1996, with two stamps and full Phoenix postmark. There’s a bit of edge and corner creasing but generally the card is in good shape and we do wonder how people made it up (or down) there. Grade: 2

Two of these Petley cards 81354 are available, both mailed in 1967 and in identical condition. Card describes the Grady Gammage Auditorium as the “Last Large Design of Frank Lloyd Wright”. Grades: 1

Mailed in 1994, with two stamps and readable Phoenix postmark. The address is on a separate sticker, and there are some abrasions on the back. The front has some faint pink post office imprints that almost look like they are part of the scenery. Grade: 3

Mailed to Hong Kong in 2008, so it’s recent. Sender used three of the unvalued “USA First Class” flag stamps and it got through OK, together with all the postal bar coding at the bottom. Grade: 2

Gila Bend, Hopp’s Western Lodge
Petley card 23732 from 1958 (according to a pencilled date on the reverse, together with the beginning of an address and a travel agent’s rubber stamp mark). Having said all that, the front is perfect, and the motel must have been refreshing indeed. Grade: 4

Actually the garden is between Phoenix and Tempe, in the interests of full disclosure. This was mailed with a 4-cent stamp in 1966, with nearly full postmark. Grade: 1
