Honolulu, U.S.S. Arizona Memorial
This unused card was bought in 1963 and tucked away. It’s as-new apart from mild aging on the reverse. It has three printed attributions on the back, so we’ll call it Nani Li’i card S-255. Grade: 1
-
Honolulu, U.S.S. Arizona
Unused Nani Li’i card S-191, dating from some point between the raising of the flagpole in 1950 and construction of the memorial itself in 1961. Grade: 1
-
Waipio Valley
Suppose there have been more than a few movies made here. Card was mailed from Honolulu in 2009 with a 69-cent stamp of the Okefenokee Swamp, which does make for an exotic counterpoint to the card. Grade: 1
-
Honolulu, Waikiki Beach
We’re not big on Roman numerals but it looks like the printed date on this unused card is 1995. That sounds about right. Grade: 1
-
Kaaawa, Kahana Bay
Big postmark on the front because the card went to the wrong place, but it was mailed from Minneapolis (definitely not Kahana Bay) in 1970 with a 6-cent stamp. Grade: 5
-
Molokai, phallic stone
OK then, this unused Nani Li’i card S-247 from the 1960s is for all of you who specialize in collecting postcards of such natural wonders. Grade: 1
-
Honolulu, aerial view
Unused Phil Mattes card H-1062 from 1996, classically pre-printed “Wish you were here!” Actually we wish we were there, too. Grade: 1
-
Pahoehoe lava, Volcanoes Nat. Park
Unused card from early 2000s, showing Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, and we have a warm spot for it (no pun intended) because it was printed in Hong Kong. Grade: 1
-
Honolulu, Manoa Valley
Exact caption reads “Manoa Valley, Honolulu, T.H.” on this old and unused M.H. Weinberg card A-9204. If you collect vintage Hawaiian postcards, you would want this–probably! Grade: 2
-
Honolulu, hula dancers
How much more classic can you get than this? It’s a highly faded real photo card, unused, with no attribution of any kind. What you see is what there is. Grade: 2
-
Honolulu, Waikiki sunset
Mailed in 1978 or 1979, this card, with serrated edges, has a 21-cent airmail stamp and mostly legible Honolulu postmark. The card’s name is “Sunset in Hawaii” and the caption identifies this as Waikiki Beach. Grade: 1
-
Kauai, Lumahai Beach
Nani Li’i card S-41 of “one of the most beautiful vistas on the Garden Island of Kauai with a foreground of the Hawaiian hala trees.” The card dates from 1960s, is unused, but starting to age on the reverse. Grade: 3
-
Honolulu, grass house
Early card #92574, showing “natives making poi, the native bread,” and published by Honolulu Paper Co. Never mailed, this card is in fine shape for its age. Grade: 2
-
Honolulu, Waikiki Beach
Though the card is heavily faded, you can easily imagine how nice it must have been–back in the day. Unused, real photo, with no attribution. Grade: 3
-
Honolulu, from above
Unused, heavily fading, real photo card captioned “City of Honolulu”. No attribution at all on the reverse. Grade: 3
-
Honolulu, from the Sea
If you live in Hawaii, or ever visited, or wish you could, you should have this card framed in your den. Unused Hawaii and South Seas Curio Co. card A-11645 dates from a time when Honolulu had a population of “forty thousand souls” of “all races, Caucasian Mongolian, Malays or Negroes.” Indeed. Grade: 2
-
Honolulu, Steamer Day
Very nice unused card, made in Germany but without any other attribution other than two reference numbers (193123 and 3594). Minor album marks on reverse corners. Grade: 2
-
Honolulu, Waikiki Beach
Faded, unused, unattributed real photo card of a nearly deserted Waikiki Beach, with Diamond Head in the background. How long ago was that? There is a caption in white on the bottom front, but it’s hard to see in the photo. Grade: 3
-
Honolulu and Harbor
This is a nice, battered, unused old card that really should appeal to anyone trying to accumulate a definitive collection of Honolulu’s pictorial history. Published for The Island Curio Co., with reference number 20562 N, the front is highly “weathered” but OK, and the reverse does have major abrasions on the two upper corners. But what a view of Honolulu! Grade: 4
-
Honolulu, Waikiki Beach
Except that the card is unused, it has just about everything the collector would want: photo, old, fully dressed people “enjoying” the beach, an elaborate seal, what more could you want? Card #61 for Hawaii & South Seas Curio, made in Germany. Album marks on reverse corners. Grade: 3
-
Flame tree
From the 1960s, an unused Nani Li’i card S-75 showing “brilliant blossoms of the Royal Poinciana (Poinciana Regia).” There is a noticeable crease on upper left front corner. Grade: 4
-
Kauai, Kalalau Valley

-
Oahu, The Blow Hole
Nani Li’i card S-147, unused and from the 1960s, OK. Grade: 2
-
Hilo, Akaka Falls
This Nani Li’i card S-162 is–like others in our Hawaii series–from the 1960s and unused. Apparently Akaka Falls was “made famous in song and legend of old Hawaii.” Grade: 1
-
Oahu, Diamond Head
Not to say there’s a shortage of postcards of Diamond Head, but there are an infinite number of views. This unused 1960s Nani Li’i card S-245 is one of them. Grade: 1
-
Oahu, Koko Crater
As of the 1960s, this Koko Crater cone represented the “most recent volcanic activity on the Island of Oahu,” some 5000 years ago. Unused Nani Li’i card S-214. Grade: 1
-
Kilauea Iki Volcano
Kilauea Iki volcano is in Hawaii National Park and the caption on reverse breathlessly announces that when it came back to life on November 14th, 1959, after 100 years of inactivity, “her fiery lava fountain towered 1900 feet! Five hundred feet higher than the Empire State Building!” Nani Li’i card S-175, unused, and definitely after November 14th, 1959! Grade: 1
-
Waimanalo coastline
Caption on this unused Kii Hawaii / Christian’s Arts and Crafts / Dexter card 50081-B (and CC-268) describes this sight as “Waimanalo Coastline as seen from Makapuu Coast Guard Station.”
-
Kilauea Iki volcano eruption
Unused Nani Li’i card S-180 with the same caption as the previous card of Kilauea Iki. We could Google to see if this volcano has erupted since 1959, but we would rather use the time entering more cards. Grade: 1
-
Maui, Haleakala Crater
Unused Nani Li’i card S-54 tells us this “vast pit in Hawaii National Park on Maui (Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa in distance) is 21 miles around the rim.” We’ve not yet walked it to find out. Grade: 1
-
Kauai, Kalalau volcano
Two of these unused cards are available. They really are photos of Kalalau, but they are actually advertising cards for fluxform. Grades: 1
-
Kona, Waiaka Lodge
Most lodges in Hawaii would have been proud of their beach … this one didn’t (doesn’t?) have much to work with. Card mailed in 1963 with 4-cent stamp and fully legible postmark. Grade: 1
-

Mailed from Honolulu in 1981 with a Scott airmail stamp and heavily inked (legible) postmark. Significant postmark smudge on the front as well. Grade: 3

-
Honolulu, Waikiki and Diamond Head
From 1975, with 7-cent stamp and only part of the postmark. Significantly stained and mottled on the reverse, but still fully readable. Grade: 4
