Sunset on Lake Michigan
Unused, old, undivided back card, heavily aged but definitely authentic. Grade: 3

Hoover (Boulder) Dam
This unused Mike Roberts card C628 gives both of the dam’s names but, as usual, we are never certain which state should get credit for it. Then called the “highest in the world, 727 feet” in the caption, Wikipedia tells us the honour now goes elsewhere: “Currently, the tallest dam in the world is Nurek Dam on the Vakhsh River in Tajikistan. It is 984 feet (300 meters) tall. Hoover Dam is 726.4 feet (221.3 meters) tall”. Awww … Grade: 1

The Desert is Alive
The caption on this unused Scenic Art card 342G refers to the desert’s “grotesque plant life,” with which we gently disagree. Grade: 1
-
Three-cent official
We’re old enough to remember when these were common, but now what we have is an unused example that is stained on the bottom left corner; and, sometime along the way, some other vendor thought it was a good idea to write the price in ink on the upper left. We would never, ever do that. Grade: 4

Building in Kansas, maybe
There’s no caption or identification. Someone was on a train in Newton, Kansas, and wanted to send this card to someone in Wichita during the short transit stop. So they did. The stamp is long gone; the remainder of the special postmark refers to “Trans Office PTS New…” (in 1962), and there’s another rubber stamp that says “Train Postoffice”. That’s all we know! Grade: 5

Route 66
As most of us know, Route 66 transcends states. As most of us feel, they should have just left it alone. Here’s a contemporary card, mailed from Phoenix in 2022, with a round Global Forever stamp hand-cancelled by a line drawn through it. Creased lower right corner. Grade: 4
-
Sundown at Roundup Time
Designers weren’t thinking too clearly when they put a caption in brown letters on top of a brown background — but it’s there at the bottom of the front. Mailed in 2022 from Phoenix with round Global Forever stamp, clear postmark, and USPS barcoding on the reverse. Grade: 1
-
Lake Tahoe
“One of the largest and most picturesque lakes in the world” spans California and Nevada, and this card doesn’t nail that down. Mailed in 1988 (from California) with three stamps and an address sticker. Grade: 3
-
Lake Superior
“The largest freshwater lake in the world”, says the caption, and we assume it still is — bordering Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan in the USA, and Canada. The card was mailed in 1988 with two stamps and an airmail sticker. Most of a clear postmark. Grade: 1

Sonoran Desert, cactus flowers
We know this unused card comes from Arizona although the caption doesn’t specifically say so. Grade: 1
