Hot Springs, Wind Cave Nat. Park, calcite
Plastichrome card P77593, bought in 1970 and never used. Reverse is aging enough to downgrade by one level, but apart from that the card is in fine shape. Grade: 2
-
Mt. Rushmore
Unused Mike Roberts card from 1970 (C2754), aging a bit but otherwise in great condition. Yup, we know there are lots of Mt. Rushmore cards. But how many of them are this one? Grade: 1
-
Mt. Rushmore, night
Two Mike Roberts cards (C14326) from the 1960s are available. One is unused and shows a little corner abrasion (Grade: 2, $2). The other was mailed in 1971 with stamp and full postmark (Grade: 1, $3).

Bad Lands (for Wall Drug)
When we were younger, Wall Drug was, and possibly still is, an exotic and remote destination. They issued their own cards, like this unused one from the late 1960s, by Dexter Press (69174-B). A little bit of aging on reverse but still: Grade: 1
-
Black Hills, Wind Cave stalactites
A Dexter Press card (53028-B) from the late 1960s, unused but with a small stain on reverse. One would hope this is a timeless view of this part of the Black Hills–but time will tell. Won’t it? Grade: 3
-
Wall Drug, then and now
In this case, “then” means 1951, and “today” looks like the 1980s, based on the cars, but we’re not certain. Two of these unused cards are available. Grades: 1
-
Wall Drug – Lousy Post Card
Anyone visiting Wall Drug has many options apart from postcards. Oddly enough, you do sort of have to hunt for the place once you leave the Interstate highway. Unused card. Grade: 1
-
Greetings from South Dakota
Three of these unused cards are available. The reverse is interesting, heavily coloured with a faded version of the front, and with two different built-in barcodes apparently giving the vendor a choice of classification. Well, we do the same thing, but without the barcodes. Grades: 1
-
Howdy from Wall Drug
This is the kind of card you like to get and not feel too guilty about. Unused. Grade: 1
-
Wall Drug dinosaur
It’s a brontosaurus in this 1960’s unused Dexter Press card 91409-B. Grade: 1
-
Wall, Greetings from Wall Drug
One of the older “Greetings” cards from Wall Drug, not the oldest but somewhere in the middle. Unused Dexter Press card 67115-B. Grade: 1
-
We finally made it to Wall Drug
If you’re the driver, or if you have kids in the car, this is more or less how you really will feel when you pull into Wall. Unused card, maybe 1960s. Grade: 1

Being more precise, this unused card shows the Prospector Souvenir and Western Clothing store. Grade: 3

Unused Dexter Press card 93971-B with serrated edges, showing both of the Pigtail Bridges and one of the tunnels. Grade: 1
-

Unused Dexter Press card 52307-B, serrated edges, asserting that this is “one of the most unusual drives that you can take in all of the U.S.A.” We can attest that it is scenic. Grade: 2
-
The Black Hills, Sylvan Lake
Unused Dexter Press card 64636-B, also with serrated edges. Grade: 1

The classic holiday card, mailed from Lead in 1957 with postmark and 2-cent stamp. A bit of postmark transfer on the front. Grade: 3

-
Badlands National Park
Multi-view card mailed in 2011 with three different stamps and most of the postmark, including some ink transfer on the front. Grade: 2
-

Cancer a specialty. This facility seems to have moved around from place to place. The card was mailed (uncertain date, but early 1900s) with postmark and stamp, from Myrtle to Gertrude. Grade: 2
-
Black Hills, “Switch Back” on Needles Road, State Park
Unused C.T. American Art (L.B. Hollister) with the state name of South Dakota inked on the reverse. Grade: 4
-
Vermillion, First School House in South Dakota
This card is very old, and looks it. Mailed in 1910, the stamp and long upside-down message are there, along with the postmark. Exceptionally, we repeat an excerpt from plaintalk dot net here: “The first permanent schoolhouse in Dakota Territory was constructed in late 1864. By … 1880, the school had outserved its usefulness and became a private residence for a family. It was later used as a paintshop, and during the latter part of 1881, according to newspaper accounts, the building was torn down and its logs transported to the country.” We just found that very interesting. Grade: 3
-
Spearfish, Black Hills Passion Play
Unused H.S. Crocker card BH-18, and could as easily be placed under “Florida” as the play was also being performed at Lake Wales. Grade: 2

Unused but unusually heavily aged Dexter Press card 64641-B. Grade: 3
-

-
Black Hills, Stuart Castle
Just about all the information you might need is in the caption of this unused Plastichrome card P23156. Grade: 1
-
Map
A little bit of everything on this typical tourist map postcard, mailed in 2013 with “Global Forever” stamp and postmark. Grade: 1

Post-1938 unmailed linen card, whose owner at the time pencilled a notation on the back that showed he or she was less than impressed. Grade: 4
-

This old card was stamped (it’s there) and partly addressed, but that’s as far as the writer got. Grade: 4
-
Sioux Falls, South Dakota State Penitentiary
Unused “local” card 13358N, a bit battered, and with lots of pencil scribbling on the reverse but this could fairly easily be erased. Grade: 4
