That this was the site of the first land battle of the Civil War sounds historic enough for us. Unused Dexter Press card 54049-B (and W.V. #31) from the 1960s. Grade: 1
-
Turnpike
It’s nothing personal, but this might be one of the most boring postcards ever made. Well, to each their own. Unused Dexter Press card 66592-B (and W-107) from the 1960s. Grade: 1

-
West Virginia Turnpike, Bender Bridge and entrance to Tunnel

Parkersburg, Blennerhasset Island and Ohio River
One of the oddest captions we’ve seen on a postcard, calling this among other things “one of the most renowned islands in the world,” and giving quite a lot of history and trivia–none of which jogged our memory of ever having heard of this renowned island before. The Curteich-Chicago linen card 4A-H1286 is unused but very, very heavily aged after having been in an album for a very long time. Grade: 3
-
Huntington, Municipal Rose Gardens, Ritter Park
Unused linen Curteich-Chicago card 0B-H2762. It was, and may still be, “The Beauty Spot of Huntington.” Grade: 1
-
Greetings from West Virginia
What an unexpectedly sad message on this older card, stamped for mailing but not postmarked so we don’t know whether the right person ever saw it. Grade: 4

Not postally used, though someone has written an August 1975 date in the stamp area. Grade: 3

Curteich-Chicago linen card 3B-H1418, mailed in 1952 with two one-cent stamps and clear postmark. Constant readers know we like to compare different cards of the same scene, so you might also see our entry 10149008 and spot the big difference. Grade: 1

-

Unused linen card 17010. Grade: 1
-
Martinsburg, Newton D. Baker Veterans’ Administration Hospital Center
Mailed in 1948 by a patient who clearly wanted to go home, this card has its stamp and postmark, and an extra small rubber-stamp indicating that the recipient answered it. Some postmark ink transfer on the front. What makes this postcard more distinctive, it seems like the original caption was along the top edge but something went wrong so the producer overprinted that black line and put a new caption at the bottom. Anyway … Grade: 3
-
Greetings from Charleston
We’re not certain what’s happening here but the Large Letter West Virginia postcard was written for mailing, in 1951, with what looks like a kind of partial postmark in the postage area–but no sign any stamp was ever there. This is Curteich-Chicago card 7A-H3535 whose overall condition is OK but we must still assign Grade: 4
-
Moundsville, West Virginia Penitentiary, View showing Entrance
Edited from Wikipedia: “The West Virginia State Penitentiary is a gothic-style prison … Now withdrawn and retired from prison use, it operated from 1876 to 1995. Currently, the site is maintained as a tourist attraction and training facility.” It was, however, very much in use (“more or less”) when this old postcard was released, no pun intended. Very faint pencil marks on the reverse and slight abrasions on lower right front corner, maybe from an album. Grade: 3
-
Greetings from West Virginia
Classic, old, unused, large letter postcard … Curteich-Chicago 9A-H881 (W.VA.21). Linen. Grade: 2
-
Charleston, Municipal Auditorium
Wikipedia tells us: “Charleston Municipal Auditorium is a public auditorium … It was constructed in 1939 and is a large monolithic concrete and steel structure, situated in the southwestern section of Charleston’s central business district.” Old postcards like this have a way of making their subjects look other-worldly, and this one is no exception. Unused, linen, Tichnor Quality Views 68895. Grade: 1
