    One of the oddest captions we’ve seen on a postcard, calling this among other things “one of the most renowned islands in the world,” and giving quite a lot of history and trivia–none of which jogged our memory of ever having heard of this renowned island before.  The Curteich-Chicago linen card 4A-H1286 is unused but very, very heavily aged after having been in an album for a very long time.  Grade: 3

  • Martinsburg, Newton D. Baker Veterans’ Administration Hospital Center

    Mailed in 1948 by a patient who clearly wanted to go home, this card has its stamp and postmark, and an extra small rubber-stamp indicating that the recipient answered it.  Some postmark ink transfer on the front.  What makes this postcard more distinctive, it seems like the original caption was along the top edge but something went wrong so the producer overprinted that black line and put a new caption at the bottom.  Anyway … Grade: 3

    We’re not certain what’s happening here but the Large Letter West Virginia postcard was written for mailing, in 1951, with what looks like a kind of partial postmark in the postage area–but no sign any stamp was ever there.  This is Curteich-Chicago card 7A-H3535 whose overall condition is OK but we must still assign Grade: 4

    Edited from Wikipedia: “The West Virginia State Penitentiary is a gothic-style prison … Now withdrawn and retired from prison use, it operated from 1876 to 1995. Currently, the site is maintained as a tourist attraction and training facility.”  It was, however, very much in use (“more or less”) when this old postcard was released, no pun intended.  Very faint pencil marks on the reverse and slight abrasions on lower right front corner, maybe from an album.  Grade: 3

    Wikipedia tells us:  “Charleston Municipal Auditorium is a public auditorium … It was constructed in 1939 and is a large monolithic concrete and steel structure, situated in the southwestern section of Charleston’s central business district.”  Old postcards like this have a way of making their subjects look other-worldly, and this one is no exception.  Unused, linen, Tichnor Quality Views 68895.  Grade: 1
