South from Table Rock
This ancient, unused real photo card gives no further clues as to where this is, but based on the requirement for a one-cent stamp, it’s probably in the USA. Grade: 2
-
Universal Postal Union
Authentic, but very badly torn and only half the card is here. Grade: 5
-
Get your Kicks on Route 66
We freely admit that Route 66 postcards are not in short supply, but we are somehow happy that the legend lives on. This card was mailed in 2013 with three different stamps and blurred double postmark. Grade: 2
-
Suspension Bridge over the Mississippi River
Specifically, between Marquette, Iowa, and Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. Unused “local” card, slightly aging. Grade: 1
-
Aspens in the Mountains of the Southwest
Unused Petley card P36568, aging gracefully. Like the trees. Grade: 1
-
Unknown structure
It’s an unused, real-photo vintage postcard; and no, we have no idea where it was or even what it is. Dormitory? Shophouses? Grade: 2
-
The Civil War 1861-1865
Unused. Grade: 1
-
Lake in the Ozarks
Unused card that coyly doesn’t want to say whether the lake is in Arkansas or Missouri. Grade: 1
-
From the Ozarks
Nice, semi-generic postcard. Unused. Grade: 1
-
Bull Shoals Lake
We can tell you, as the card does, that Bull Shoals Lake spans the Missouri-Arkansas state line. Unused. Grade: 1
-
Hillbilly Livin’ – Springtime
It helps if you’re from the USA to understand all the little digs here. But if you’re not, don’t worry, the caption spells it all out for you. Unused. Grade: 1
-
Hillbilly Livin’ – Home Improvement
It helps if you’re from the USA to understand all the little digs here. But if you’re not, don’t worry, the caption spells it all out for you. As and when we open an “outhouse” category, this card will be deep into it. Unused. Grade: 1
-
Route 66 sign
Maybe not old, but among Route 66 postcards, one of the most obvious. Unused. Grade: 1
-
Get Your Kicks – Route 66
Unused card, not to be confused with 10100060 which has the same design but a different legend. Grade: 1
-
Here we are … on Route 66
Unused card, not to be confused with 10100059 which has the same design but a different legend. Two are available. Grade: 1
-
Commemorating the American Bicentennial 1776-1976
Unused card #76-K from Heirloom Collector Series. Aging. Grade: 1
-
Bonneville Dam
Unused vintage Mike Roberts card C222. As the dam spans the Columbia River between Oregon and Washington, we’re not favouring either state. Grade: 1
-
Sunset on The Mississippi
If we wanted to Google “Bridges crossing the Mississippi River” we would certainly learn which one this is. The unused card however chooses not to divulge. Grade: 1
-
Bonneville Dam
Unused H.S. Crocker card K-46, explaining that the dam spans Oregon and Washington states. Grade: 1
-
Discovery of Gold – 1848
We know this represents California but we’ve no idea what or where the card came from, most likely in the 1970s because someone wrote their name and date on the back, along with “Wax Museum”. Grade: 5
-
Pontoon Bridge and Raft, Mississippi River
Unused old Bosselman card 5926 in good condition. It makes no reference to any specific location. Grade: 1
-
Hoover Dam Nevada – Arizona
Unused Curteichcolor card 8DK-818. Aging. Grade: 1
-
Moonlight Scene on the Pacific Coast
Not postally used. Many ages ago, someone wrote a long message, in pencil, that covers the reverse. Grade: 4
-
Bad Land Formations
Unused old postcard, very heavily handled over the years. Grade: 4
-
Francis (sic) Willard School
It’s an unused, real-photo card, very old, with her name misspelled, and no other caption. There are lots of Frances Willard Schools in the USA–we even attended one of them, long ago–though not, we think, this one. Grade: 3
-
On the Trail
Unused Dexter Press card 5S-29238-B. We’re guessing this is not in Florida. Grade: 2
-
Lake
It’s possible this card does say where the lake is: there’s a tiny red caption stretching along the bottom front edge, but it blends in so well, we can’t read it. The card was mailed in 1912, with stamp and Iowa postmark. Grade: 2
-
Winter in the Rockies
“The Rockies” narrows down the location, but we won’t know for sure exactly where. What we do know is that this card was mailed in 1907; has most of the postmarks from both sending and receiving locations; and its stamp. The card is extremely heavily aged. Grade: 4
-
Lake Superior Circle Route
Mailed in 2021, this card has four different stamps (three uncancelled) and some postmark transfer on the front. One might think of shipping more than roads, but there it is. Grade: 2
-
Greetings from The South
Unused card that we know to have begun life in New Orleans, Louisiana. Two of these are available. Grades: 1
-
Rhododendron in bloom
Norfolk & Western Railway provided the photo for this unused Plastichrome card P23873, whose caption clearly states the nearby Blue Ridge Parkway was still being built. So you know this is an older card … Grade: 1
-
Greetings from the Amish Country
Unused “local” card showing these three boys during the wheat harvest. The card was published in Pennsylvania, where many Amish persons live, but the caption does not specifically say so. Small smudge on the bottom reverse. Grade: 2
-
Out Where The West Begins
Our website has (or had) a few cards with this poem by Arthur Chapman, each one having different graphics. So it gets around. Somewhere in this world, someone is trying to collect them all. Good luck! Unused Curteich-Chicago C.T. American Art card 88021-N. Grade: 1
-
Wild Azaleas in the Beautiful Ozarks
Unused old linen card not specifying the exact location (though published in Missouri), so we can safely assume azaleas can be found in more than one state. Grade: 1
-
The Beautiful Ohio
Unused Dexter Press card 54020-B (W.V. #1) whose caption says a lot about the Ohio River but not where the photo was taken. But that Dexter Press secondary reference number more or less gives the secret away. Grade: 1
-
Sunset on Lake Michigan
Unused, old, undivided back card, heavily aged but definitely authentic. Grade: 3
-
Hoover (Boulder) Dam
This unused Mike Roberts card C628 gives both of the dam’s names but, as usual, we are never certain which state should get credit for it. Then called the “highest in the world, 727 feet” in the caption, Wikipedia tells us the honour now goes elsewhere: “Currently, the tallest dam in the world is Nurek Dam on the Vakhsh River in Tajikistan. It is 984 feet (300 meters) tall. Hoover Dam is 726.4 feet (221.3 meters) tall”. Awww … Grade: 1
-
The Desert is Alive
The caption on this unused Scenic Art card 342G refers to the desert’s “grotesque plant life,” with which we gently disagree. Grade: 1
-
Three-cent official
We’re old enough to remember when these were common, but now what we have is an unused example that is stained on the bottom left corner; and, sometime along the way, some other vendor thought it was a good idea to write the price in ink on the upper left. We would never, ever do that. Grade: 4
-
Building in Kansas, maybe
There’s no caption or identification. Someone was on a train in Newton, Kansas, and wanted to send this card to someone in Wichita during the short transit stop. So they did. The stamp is long gone; the remainder of the special postmark refers to “Trans Office PTS New…” (in 1962), and there’s another rubber stamp that says “Train Postoffice”. That’s all we know! Grade: 5
