  • Four Seas Restaurant, “Eight Immortals” (San Francisco)

Google tells us this restaurant is still going strong, since the 1930s, so this unused card from the 1960s of the “Eight Immortals” cocktail lounge is a little piece of nostalgia from its history. Grade: 1

    Code: 32100001

    Price: $4.00

  • Top of the Mark, San Francisco

As the card says, “Truly the world’s most spectacular cocktail lounge!” and while that may or may not have been true in the 1950s when this unused card (H.S. Crocker 5:SF-26A) was produced, it has rivals now.  Two of these cards of the Mark Hopkins Hotel are available.  Grades: 1

From Stouffer’s “Top of the Rock,” atop the Prudential Building. Plastichrome card P19111, unused, but with the date “June 1957” pencilled on reverse, and also a travel agency’s large rubber stamp, and a significant stain too. None of these affect the front, which is fine. Grade: 4

    Code: 32100004

    Price: $1.50

    Stouffer’s (Chicago, USA)
  • Bourbon Street, French Quarter (New Orleans, USA)

It’s not so much what the card shows, as what was done to it. It was mailed from Key West (two stamps) in February 1986 to a Malaysian address, but wound up in Minneapolis–which put the postmark that actually cancelled the stamps. From there it went on to Malaysia. TMI. Grade: 3

    Code: 32100005

  • Patpong (Bangkok)

Who knows, there may have been a time not so long ago when Patpong accounted for the majority of overseas visits to Bangkok. But why is this card a bit more expensive? It’s because of the stamp on the back, a 1-1/4″ by 4-3/4″ massive view of one of the royal barges during the Golden Jubilee in 1996. Card was mailed in 1997 and the stamp has one legible postmark. Despite a little bit of abrasion on the reverse, this card is well worth the price. Grade: 2

  • Malaysian cartoonist Lat, Rotan at bar

Lat is and always will be Malaysia’s most famous (and perceptive) cartoonist.  These cards were issued by the New Straits Times, among others, and meant to be cut from a sheet, so all in the series will have irregular edges.  Two of these are available. These were mailed in 1991 with Pahang stamps and legible postmarks, but also massive ink transfer on the front.  The better one is Grade: 3 ($2) and the other is Grade: 5 ($1).
