We must explain. The card does not look like this. We have self-censored, because we are in Hong Kong. The full card (we can e-mail a complete scan if you are interested) comes from Art Gallery of Ontario, and consists of a photographic portrait of the artist overlaid with quotations and phrases in various shades. But if you’ve read this far, we think you know what this is all about. Grade: 1

Bataille de Fleurus (France)
You really need to be paying attention to realize this is an ad card. Though the painting may be in Versailles, the fine print in the caption promotes Sirop de Deschiens, an early 20th century cure-all. Of interest also, the unused card allowed a message on the back for France, Algeria, and Tunisia only. Grade: 1
