    Over many years since this card was mailed from Wilkinson, Indiana in 1909 with its one-cent stamp, it has been in an album, has been handled by countless hands, and yet has survived.  Very, very rarely do we say:  “if this card could talk …”  Grade: 3

    Alas, there’s no way the scan can capture the holographic brilliance of this card.  You could think “aluminium foil combined with kaleidoscope” or you could just read the caption, which we quote here verbatim:  “When light is exposed to this card it is reflected from the closely spaced parallel lines in the pattern, producing spectral colors.  These iridescent colors are different from ordinary colors in that they change with movement of the card, light or position of the viewer.”  In any event the effect is spectacular–and those paper clips move, too.  Unused.  Grade: 1
