Submarine
Unused American Colortype Co. (Chicago) postcard 10, with extensive historical caption on the reverse. Grade: 2
-
Carnival cruise ship Paradise
Five of these jumbo (6″ x 9″) cards are available. Technically we suppose they are not postcards because they don’t have a pre-printed address section on the reverse. But they look and feel like huge cards and could probably be used that way. Never mailed, as-new. Grades: 1 ($9 each)
-
M/S Sagafjord
Card issued by Norwegian American cruises and mailed from Juneau in 1982. Two stamps, but no legible postmark. Grade: 2
-
Newport Harbor ferry system (California)
Unused Royal Pictures card B-490 (and S17883) of the Newport to Balboa ferry. Grade: 1
-
S.S. Florida (Miami)
Tichnor linen card 504, not mailed but with a travel agency rubber stamp on the reverse. The front is in very good shape. Googling the name of this ship leads to all sorts of exotic articles! Grade: 4
-
Ferry crossing river, Sacramento (California)
Google doesn’t give up anything about this card, issued by Kropp in Milwaukee (No. 3281) a long time ago. Never mailed, appropriately aged. Grade: 2
-
Catalina Island (California)
Never got there. Always wanted to. This Burney L. Ramming card of Old Ben, the sea lion, was mailed internationally in 1992, with one stamp and full Avalon postmark. Has a red rubber-stamped Air Mail from post office on reverse. Minor abrasion on upper left corner. Grade: 2
-
Steamer Day, Honolulu
Very nice unused card, made in Germany but without any other attribution other than two reference numbers (193123 and 3594). Minor album marks on reverse corners. Grade: 2
-
U-505 submarine (Chicago, USA)
Aero Distributing card 5C-K442 (and CK-200) showing the submarine at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry. We were there when the sub moved to that location–we just won’t tell you when that was. The card has a large rubber stamp from a travel agent on the reverse. Grade: 4
-
Lobster boats (USA)
Timeless yet slightly generic view of the coast of Maine, near the mouth of the Kennebunk River. It’s Dexter Press card 32028-C (also M-1323), unused, with serrated edges, great condition. Grade: 1
-
Tombouctou (Mali)
Unused Iris card M200046. Now tell us: who doesn’t want a postcard from Timbuktu for their collection? And the card is a lot cheaper than going there. Grade: 1
-
Star Ferry in front of Wanchai (Hong Kong)
Unused Tourists card 095, 5-1/2″ x 7″. It might have been better to say “across the harbour from” Wanchai. Grade: 1
-
Fisherman’s Wharf (San Francisco)
This 1958 view seems oddly uncommercial. A Mike Roberts card (C4240), it is unmailed. One front corner has a small abrasion, and the reverse has a travel agent’s black rubber stamp. Grade: 4
-
Queen Mary (California)
Unmailed, official souvenir card from the joint exhibit of these two vehicles. (Vehicles?) Mike Roberts card 07-0114-009 and B15228, never mailed, beginning to mottle a bit on reverse but front is clean. Grade: 2
-
San Francisco Bay, ferry boat
Unused Selithco card from E.F. Clements (#206), from late 1950s, with Bay Bridge in background. The card has a large rubber stamp from a travel agent on reverse. Grade: 4
-
Fisherman’s Wharf (San Francisco)
It might be great fun to start a specialised collection of Fisherman’s Wharf cards, tracing from what it was to what it is now. This unused linen entry from Nature Tone Views, Scenic View Card Co., #43672 and #27, goes back to the 40s or earlier and refers to the “gay, colorful fishing boats.” Umm…, aged but in good shape otherwise. Grade: 2
-
Star Ferry in front of Wanchai 075 (Hong Kong)
Unused Tourists card 075, 5-1/2″ x 7″. Once again, it might have been better to say “across the harbour from” Wanchai. Grade: 1
-
British Columbia Ferries
Mailed in 1984. 64-cent stamp is intact (though upside down) and postmark is legible. Other than very minor edge abrasions, card looks OK. Grade: 2

Never-mailed Mark Turok card, great on the front and beginning to age a bit on reverse. Grade: 2

Unused Dexter Press card 66623-B (and 093) from mid-1960s. Grade: 1
-
N.S. Rosario and typhoon (Hong Kong)
A good search engine will give you more of the story, but the caption on this unused M. Sternberg card tells you most of what you need to know. Significant album indents on the corners, and someone has made an inked notation on the reverse of the type of vessel the Rosario was. Grade: 4
-
Junk in Hongkong-Harbour
Card 17 printed in Germany, and Specially Made for The Graeco Egyptian Tobacco Store. No, the title does not refer to what now can commonly be found in Hong Kong Harbour, or what’s left of it. Unused. Grade: 2
-
Dragon Boat race (Canton, China)
Unused Lau Ping Kee card 207534 showing this ever-popular holiday event. Normally aged and great for framing. Grade: 2
-
Sampan (PR China)
We know it’s a sampan, and someone long aso also wrote “sampan” in Japanese on the back of this otherwise uncaptioned real-photo card. It doesn’t indicate that the setting is China but we believe that to be the case. Grade: 2
-
Floating restaurants (Aberdeen, Hong Kong)
Card mailed in 1996. Stamp is intact and postmark is fully legible but it missed the stamp. A little creasing and buffeting around the edges. Grade: 3
-
Chinese junk (Hong Kong)
Old-vs-New contrast, and unusual to see even a tinted photo of a junk with sails other than red. Card was mailed in 1995, has two stamps and mostly legible postmark. Grade: 2
-
Jumbo Floating Restaurant (Aberdeen, Hong Kong)
Pretty much everything you could want in a used, contemporary card. It’s 5″ x 7″, mailed in 1997 with six stamps and mostly legible postmark. It has a blue airmail sticker affixed. Minor edge battering, nothing significant. A well-travelled card. Grade: 2
-
Traditional junk (Hong Kong)
These are not to be seen in Hong Kong’s harbour any more, unless it is the one sponsored by the Tourist Association, which is definitely not the one pictured here! The card is probably from the 1970s, not mailed but with an extensive message written on the back. Grade: 4
-
Wan Fu, Hilton Hotel (Hong Kong)
When there still was a Hilton in Hong Kong, it was a rare treat to be invited aboard the Wan Fu. Now, no more Hilton, and no more Wan Fu. We think. Where did it go? Card mailed in 1984, two stamps, full postmark, blue tri-lingual airmail stamp affixed. Grade: 1
-
West Java, Carita Beach (Indonesia)
It took about 3-1/2 hours from here by the fastest boat we could find to get to the remnants of Krakatoa, the volcano. Colleagues may disagree, but we thought it was worth the trip. Two of these unused cards are available, and despite the scan, the caption is all there. Grades: 1
-
Feri Malaysia, Cruise Muhibah (Malaysia)
Quoting the caption of this card, issued by the company Feri Malaysia Sdn Bhd, “Cruise Muhibah the only passenger ship plying Kuantan, Kuching, Kota Kinabalu and Singapore … weighing 7,900 tons, 134 meters long, can accommodate 600 passengers.” You could get all that through Google but we saved you the effort. Mailed in the late 1980s, with stamp but only partial postmark. Grade: 2
-
Hydrofoil wharf (Macau)
First ferries, then hydrofoils, then jetfoils, then helicopters, and soon–a bridge. Unused card from the 1970s. Grade: 1
-

Raphael Tuck Oilette series #8961, unused, with only minor corner abrasions on the front and normal aging on reverse. Grade: 2
-
Generations on sampan (Hong Kong)
Published by Sternberg (#10), this unused card has tiny abrasions on lower corners but in all other respects is in terrific condition. Actual title on card: “Life on board Chinese Sampan, 3 Generations.” Not a whole lot of people live this way in Hong Kong now, but you can still find them. Grade: 2
-
Sydney Harbour and Crystal Harmony
Unused card that makes this liner look awfully large. Grade: 1
-
Fishing boat of east coast (Malaysia)
Two cards are available, also from 1991. One has commemorative stamp and partial postmark but has a noticeable edge abrasion confined mostly to lower right reverse (Grade: 4, $2). The other card would normally be Grade 2 but instead of postmarking the stamp, someone drew through it with a pen (Grade: 4, $2).
-
Port Kelang, Selangor (Malaysia)
Two cards available, mailed five years apart. One from 1986 has Selangor stamp, full postmark, and a small crinkle on upper left front corner (Grade: 2, $4). One from 1991 has stamp but no legible postmark; also pencilled notation of original price of card on reverse, and a postmark smudge on front (Grade: 3, $3).
