Two cards are available. One was never mailed, and has minor edge abrasion (Grade: 2, $9). The other was mailed from Bamako in 1968, has four stamps intact and legible postmark (Grade: 2, $19).

Unused Nani Li’i card S-191, dating from some point between the raising of the flagpole in 1950 and construction of the memorial itself in 1961. Grade: 1

This unused card was bought in 1963 and tucked away. It’s as-new apart from mild aging on the reverse. It has three printed attributions on the back, so we’ll call it Nani Li’i card S-255. Grade: 1

On the front, a nice representation of bucolic Malta. On the reverse, stickers and an unpostmarked stamp. Grade: 4

Unused, heavily aged antique postcard with an additional purple chop on the front–this chop belongs there and is not a flaw. The card was made in Wakayama. Does that help? Grade: 3 -

Two mailed cards are here. One from 1990 has stamp and mostly legible postmark, clean and nice (Grade: 1, $4). The other from 1991 has a bit of edge buffeting, stamp, full postmark, and also one big stain on reverse (Grade: 4, $2).

The kind of photo we used to hope National Geographic would have. But you don’t need to wait that long. Unused SW Singapore card KC7495 from the 1970s or earlier, beginning to age, otherwise undamaged. Grade: 2

A mid-century card mailed from Brunei (not Malaysia, but surrounded by it) with two stamps and partly distinct postmark. There’s also a blurred rubber stamp of a return address. Grade: 3

Peninsular & Oriental “Strathaird”
The Strathaird, a Peninsular & Oriental vessel launched in 1932 at Barrow, UK, and scrapped in Hong Kong in 1962. This souvenir postcard fold-out has 5 photographs of the ship and its various rooms. Heavily aged and mottled, with small pencilled notation on front. Grade: 3 -

Bad things first: heavily aged and mottled, and thumbtack hole. Better things: mailed with stamp, full postmark, and a blue rubber stamp that says something in German but looks related to the vessel. Grade: 4

Unused card. Did you know that Shelburne “was for a time the largest town in British North America”? Neither did we. Grade: 2

Trading junk off Port Klang (Malaysia)
This Airfoto card is the type one normally associates with China or Hong Kong, but here it is in Malaysia. Card was mailed in 1986. The stamp is there but the postmark is incomplete and not legible. Fingerprint smudges on reverse. Grade: 3

Charles W. Morgan (Mystic, Connecticut)
Mailed in Old Lyme in 1967 with full postmark and 4-cent stamp, this card is heavily aged on the reverse and has a significant crease across the lower part of the card. It is also from the accumulation of the Charles Girard family, a point we will only mention once or twice and leave the remainder of their wonderful collection to speak for itself. Grade: 4

Written while on a cruise, and mailed from the US with an 8-cent stamp in 1973. Grade: 3

M.V. Chinook II
Other than looking like someone took a bite from the upper left corner, this Canadian card was apparently bought and stamped (Canadian) in Canada then brought to Washington state where it was stamped again (USA) and mailed, with Olympia postmark. So a Canadian stamp is cancelled by an American postmark. Those days were more easy-going. Grade: 4 (but interesting).

Norwegian Caribbean Lines
In 1979 this 4.5″ x 7.25″ card was mailed from Nassau with stamp and full postmark. As we type this, it’s cold outside, so a cruise would feel pretty good right now. Thumbtack holes all around. Grade: 4
