A real-photo card whose caption calls the dam “The world’s greatest power producer since 1945. The 18 generators are to be in operation in 1951 …” and the card was mailed in 1951 with a nice and full Coulee Dam postmark and 6-cent air mail stamp. -
Lake City, Fishing Below Kentucky Dam (USA)
Unused Plastichrome card P36775. We sometimes think we could open a new category called “The …est” and somehow each postcard would fit inside. Why do we say this here? Because this card’s caption–probably written in the 1950s or early 60s–says the Kentucky Dam is “Forming the largest man made lake in the world.” We Googled. It’s not even in the Top 10 now. Grade: 1
-

Greetings from Rock Island, Illinois (USA)
It’s surprising how many of our categories this unused Mike Roberts card C16526 falls into. The caption is short but pithy with nothing but proper nouns. One of them: this is Tugboat Ann Brent. Usually we only search aircraft records, but in this case we looked into Google for the tugboat, and found this: “… on June 11, 1984, the U.S. towboat ANN BRENT, which was downbound in the Mississippi River pushing a 4-barge tow, collided with the upbound Greek tankship MANTINIA. As a result of this accident, the lead barge in the tow sank and discharged its entire cargo of No.6 oil into the river. The other barges in the tow were damaged to a lesser degree, but none of their cargoes were spilled. The MANTINIA sustained serious damage to its bow. No deaths or serious injuries resulted from this accident. The total damage to all vessels involved in this accident was estimated to exceed $500,000. The National Transportation Safety Board determines that the probable cause of this accident was the ambiguity of the meeting agreement reached by the ANN BRENT’s operator and the MANTINIA’s pilot over the bridge-to-bridge radiotelephone.” Thought you’d like to know. And this is Dam no. 15 across the Mississippi River. Grade: 1

Racine, The Old Mill Dam (Wisconsin, USA)
Even before Curteich attribution, there was C.T. Art-Colortone, as it is on this unmailed old linen card 9A-H425 with some lightly penciled writing on the back. Is the dam still there? When we Google, all we find is old postcards. Grade: 3
