JFK assassination scene (Dallas)
The world is divided into two types of people: those who remember where they were when this happened, and everyone else. We do. Card is unused, but very heavily smudged on reverse. The front also has minor abrasions, but it’s still very clear. Plastichrome #10P73664. Serrated edges. Grade: 4

N.S. Rosario and typhoon (Hong Kong)
A good search engine will give you more of the story, but the caption on this unused M. Sternberg card tells you most of what you need to know. Significant album indents on the corners, and someone has made an inked notation on the reverse of the type of vessel the Rosario was. Grade: 4

Unused C. Piens (Kowloon) card 19411, minor edge abrasions and normally aged reverse. You must imagine how radically Canton–now Guangzhou–has changed since then. Actually, unless you’ve seen it, you cannot imagine. Grade: 3

Ka Lee Building fire (Hong Kong)
A good card of a dismal event. The fire was in 1996; the card was mailed in 1999, using three stamps of which only one was postmarked, and that mark is legible. There’s a blue tri-lingual airmail sticker affixed, and the US Postal Service has, again, graciously imprinted their orange barcode across the front. Grade: 2

This was close to home, literally. Card was mailed in 1999, with three stamps of which one is bizarre by any standard; two full postmarks and also a blue airmail sticker. Grade: 1

1983 flood, Wanchai (Hong Kong)
Front: some postmark smudging, and the US Postal Service orange barcode along the bottom. Reverse: mailed in 1999, three stamps of which one is torn but the odd one is OK; partial postmark; blue airmail sticker obscured by (yet again) US Postal Service sticker and more barcode. Grade: 4

1923 earthquake damage (Japan)
Many, many years ago this card had the misfortune to be on top of a stack held together by a rubber band. That rubber band hardened right into the card and most of it is still there. OK, we’ve given you the bad news. The card many years later, 1988, was mailed with two stamps and full Akasaka postmark. Low grade but has its own history! Grade: 5

We can’t read the caption, but we trust Andrew, the writer, implicitly and so we also know the card comes after 1923. But before 1984, when it was mailed, with three stamps and full Shiba postmark. Grade: 2

Borneo Divers And Sea Sports (Sabah) issued a series of oversized (5″ x 7″) cards commemorating the various wrecks their customers explore, including this one, also known as “American Wreck” from 1945. Card mailed in 1996, has Wilayah Persekutuan stamp, mostly legible postmark, and minor postal creasing. Grade: 2

Three as-new folios are available, from 1992, each containing nine cards and a historical summary of these locations. Artwork of a 1912 painting on a 2013 card mailed from Lithuania with stamp and postmark. The card has three of four perforated edges, indicating it had been in a book or set. Grade: 1

The Fall of Richmond, Virginia
This is a Currier and Ives lithograph of the April, 1865 U.S. Civil War event. The card is not so old, of course, being mailed in 2013 with stamp and unusually clear postmark. Some minor USPS processing abrasion on the back, and faint orange barcoding on the front. Grade: 3

The Sinking of the Fascist A.A. Cruiser Niobe
This is an unused, Soviet-era (1976) card whose reverse is almost entirely taken up with the story of the event, in Russian. It would be awkward but not impossible to mail this as a postcard in the normal way. Grade: 1

Issued by Canada Post in 2012, with large pre-printed international postage in the same style as this photo. The card measures about 4-5/8″ x 6-3/4″ and was mailed in 2013. Grade: 1

Unused, contemporary card of a facility built following a devastating flood in 1889, in what is now the Clara Barton National Historic Site. The writing at the bottom of the photo is part of the card’s design. Grade: 1

Hindenburg and Titanic, Fire & Ice (USA)
A multi-faceted card, from the National Postal Museum of Washington DC’s Smithsonian. A circular chop on the reverse attests that the card was posted from the Museum, and this is alongside three stamps, two postmarks, and a blue USPS bilingual airmail label–and barcoding on both sides. Enough? Grade: 3
