Tamar Development Project – Postage Prepaid Postcard Series (Eight assorted sets and postmarks)(Hong Kong)
This is a group of eight sets of four cards each, most likely various postmarks similar to or the same as what we have described in entries immediately preceding this. But this group of sealed sets is still itself sealed up collectively as we received it from the Government. Expect 32 individual cards in total. And, as a footnote: after so much to-do about this massive new complex, they finally got it opened, and then guess what? Legionnaire’s Disease in a senior official’s private toilet. Grade: 1

Tokyo, Diet Building
The National Diet Building (国会議事堂) is where both houses of the National Diet of Japan meet. Sessions of the House of Representatives take place in the south wing and sessions of the House of Councillors in the north wing. Completed in 1936, it’s constructed entirely of Japanese materials, with the exception of the stained glass, door locks, and pneumatic tube system. This postcard dates from mid-20th century and is unused. Grade: 1
-
State Hermitage and aerial view, St. Petersburg (Russia)
We often wonder how postcards of this size (5-7/8″ x 8-1/4″) can survive being mailed, but this one did, in 2012, almost unscathed. It has one part of a stamp and full postmark. Grade: 4
-
Sonsbecker Ansichten 1 (Sonsbeck Views 1) – Rathaus
Mailed in 2012, with stamp, most of the postmark, and blue Priority label affixed. Orange postal barcoding on the reverse. Grade: 1
-
Moonlight on Government Buildings from G.P.H. Fiji
In December 1942 a man wrote to his mother in St. Paul, Minnesota, and mailed the card in St. Paul (it has the stamp and clear postmark) telling her that he would be in Los Angeles for Christmas. Not knowing the back story, we wonder whether mom would have been happiest getting this card from Los Angeles, St. Paul, or … Fiji. Nobody will ever know. Real photo. Grade: 4

-
Albany, The Plaza, Old Post Office and State Capitol (New York)
This card was mailed in 1960, with 3-cent stamp and full Albany postmark. But there’s a twist: the writer forgot to put any address, so the Post Office placed their large purple “Returned to Writer” chop in that space, and returned it … but to whom? The writer didn’t put her own address. Was Albany so small in 1960 that the Post Office knew who “Peggy” was? We’ll never know. Grade: 2
-
Greetings from the City of Washington (D.C.)
A bit odd the designer would allow the card to turn out this way, but so it is. Mailed in 1911 with stamp and clear D.C. postmark, this large letter card identifies each of the attractions, giving us the chance to list it in several theme categories also. Grade: 2
-

-
Tallinn Town Hall, Estonia (as CCCP) (Maximum Card)
This card is making us work. First, we are listing it geographically twice: once under Estonia, where it is now; and once under USSR, where it once was. Google gives us plenty of information about Tallinna Raekoda (in Estonian), describing it as “the only intact gothic style town hall in the Northern Europe.” We have no reason to dispute that. The front of the card is OK. The reverse is not. It is unwritten, but there had been some kind of stamp that was removed, and the right side looks like it had been pasted into a book or album. Because the front is fine, we give this Grade: 4
-
Madrid, Ministerio de Fomento
This is really an old, unused B&W postcard but is printed on paper so flimsy that it is impossible to imagine it could have been mailed and arrived safely. If you buy it, we will be certain to pack it well. We think this is the Minisry of Public Works and Transport, but don’t hold us to that. Grade: 3
-
Birmingham, Victoria Square and Council House (England)
Real-photo card mailed in 1956, with stamp and postmark. Significant crease on upper right, and some postmark ink transfer on the front, too. Grade: 3
-
The Pentagon, Arlington (Virginia)
There’s no shortage of Pentagon postcards, but the Smithsonian–which should know better, we think–loudly captions this as being in Washington, DC, when of course it is across the Potomac River in Arlington. Oh, well. Mailed in 2013 with five different stamps (two of them uncancelled) and full postmark. Perforated left edge suggests it came out of a book. Grade: 2
