  • San Francisco, Chinatown (folio) (California)

Greetings from San Francisco Chinatown, in this fold-out folio of pictures from a Stanley A. Piltz “Pictorial Wonderland” item D-4291, unused.  Technically these are not postcards because the photos are on both sides of the paper, and these include (among others) The Soothsayer, Picturesque Costumes, Chinese Telephone Exchange, Bulletin of Latest News, Fortune Teller, Tin How Temple Interior, and a “Golden Dragon” parade of good luck.  This would be the iconic postcard-style representation of one of the world’s most famous Chinatowns.  As a bonus, the inside cover has a long story about the area and its attractions.   Grade: 1

  • Greetings from Kosova, multiple kullas

As often, we are indebted to Wikipedia for this explanation of kullas:  “A distinctive type of Ottoman tower houses meaning “mountain” or “top” via Turkish kule, developed and were built in the Balkans, as well as in Romania, after the Ottoman conquest in the Middle Ages by both Christian and Muslim communities. The practice began during the decline of Ottoman power in the 17th century and flourished until the early 20th century. The tower houses were typically made out of stone, rose three or four storeys, and were square or rectangular in shape. They served both military (defence, watchtower) and civilian (residential) purposes in order to protect the extended family.”  When Wikipedia is good, it’s very good.  The bilingual captions on this unused card explain each one of those you see.  Grade: 1

  • Greetings from Myrtle Beach, Pavilion (South Carolina, USA)

We thank Wikipedia for this (abridged) description of The Pavilion:  “The Myrtle Beach Pavilion was a historic pay-per-ride, 11-acre amusement park that was located at the corner of 9th Avenue and Ocean Boulevard, down from the Family Kingdom Amusement Park.  (It) had well over 40 different attractions   and included the wooden rollercoaster Hurricane: Category 5. Despite efforts made by citizens to save the park, it was lost to redevelopment in 2007.  While the park was officially closed and became a vacant lot on 9th Avenue and Ocean Boulevard, some rides and attractions were moved to Broadway At The Beach.” Anyway, the Curteichcolor card 5C-K301 is unused but very slight aging.  Grade: 1
