William W. Backus Hospital, Norwich (Connecticut, USA)
Founded in 1893, still there, still important, and a fine example of a hospital postcard. Unused Plastichrome card P57136, mild aging. Grade: 1
-
Delaware Hospital, Wilmington (Delaware, USA)
Unused, linen card telling us that this “is one of the oldest and best equipped hospitals in this section of the country”. Oh to be a caption writer. Grade: 1
-
St. John’s Hospital, Leavenworth (Kansas, USA)
Unused card, for which we want to get the identity crisis out of the way: it says “St. John’s Hospital” while various Google entries refer to what might now be the correct name, “St. John Hospital”. Either way, the caption says that what you see in the artist’s drawing was “to be erected” and then dedicated in 1964 so we hope they made it on time. The card is beginning to show its age, and the hospital has mixed reviews, but these are trying times. Grade: 2

New Mayo Clinic Diagnostic Building, Rochester (Minnesota, USA)
Curteich-Chicago C.T. Art-Colortone card 0C-H1715, mailed in 1951 (with stamp and Rochester postmark) while the building was still under construction. Hard to say who was under more stress: the card’s writer, or the building. Grade: 1
-
Memorial and Crippled Children’s Hospital, Roanoke (Virginia, USA)
Unused old linen-style card, oddly printed on both sides but otherwise in excellent shape. Grade: 1
-
Veterans Administration Center, Togus (Maine, USA)
Not postally used, but with a message filling the reverse, as laconic as Maine itself. Grade: 4
-
Madison, St. Mary’s Hospital (Wisconsin, USA)
Opened in September, 1912, now SSM Health Saint Mary’s Hospital – Madison, formerly St. Mary’s Hospital, is a 440-bed not-for-profit hospital serving 18 surrounding south-central Wisconsin counties. So it, too, is a survivor. Unused Curteich-Chicago card 7A-H479 (739) dating from the late 1930s or early 1940s. Grade: 1

Wausau, Wausau Memorial Hospital (Wisconsin, USA)
In 1970, two Wausau hospitals (St. Mary’s and Memorial — this one) agreed to merge. Until the new Wausau Hospital Center was built in 1979, the two hospitals operated as Wausau Hospital North (St. Mary’s) and Wausau Hospital South (Memorial). Decades later, they adopted the name “Aspirus”. Here’s an older, unused card from before all that happened. Grade: 1
