    This unused Plastichrome card P79343 has top and bottom perforated edges, indicating it had been part of a set.  The caption titled “Lighthouse Keeper’s Quarters” only indicates “The Outer Banks of North Carolina” as the location, and tells us that these living quarters had become the Museum of the Sea.  The card is starting to age.  Grade: 2

    There was an exhibition at the Louwman Museum in The Hague, celebrating 125 years of automobile advertising.  The caption on the back is long and all in Dutch, but somehow doesn’t identify this car as a famous American flop, the Edsel.  Mailed in 2012 with stamp and postmark.  Some postmark ink smudging on the front.  Grade: 2

    More specifically, Laocoon and His Sons, a marble sculpture now in the Vatican museums, and undeniably very, very old–with Wikipedia suggesting dates from 160 BC to 20 BC, “making 42 to 20 the most likely.”  This is an old, unused, sepia card.  Grade: 1

    We know the card is from 1946, though looks much older.  The front:  what you see.  The reverse:  stamp, a huge special “Befreiungsfeie Wiener Secession” postmark, the attribution “508 M.L.M.W.II”, and no handwriting.  (Like a first-day-of-issue cover, though we don’t know.)  Grade: 1

    An old stone fortress/castle from the Middle Ages, this became a museum of archaeology in 1890 and has expanded to include other areas.  As for the card, sepia, with stamp and postmark as you can see here.  The back is unwritten, but the printed attribution reads “Ern. Thill, Bruxelles, serie Anvers phototon, no. 12”.  Grade: 1

    Years ago, a set of cards had been sold with a cardboard cover whose two sides could also be used as postcards if they were separated.  This is one of those two sides.  It’s unused, and looks much like a normal but older postcard.  This “miniature” is from the 17th century.  Grade: 3

  • Hong Kong Science Museum (set)

    An open, but complete, set of six unused cards produced by the Science Museum in conjunction with the Urban Council.  The scan shows the paper sleeve (upper left) and three of the six cards.  The other three cards include a relief model of Hong Kong’s land area, a security robot on patrol in the museum, and “images made from the synchronization of a series of time-lapsed images taken by camera”.  The aircraft, not incidentlly, is “Betsy,” a DC-3 built in 1942 and the first plane of Cathay Pacific Airways.  Grade: 1

    We had the great good luck to be able to visit The Hermitage long ago, when the country was still CCCP and the city was still Leningrad.  Wow!  What exhibits!  Now, a postcard, mailed in 2013 with four somewhat overlapping stamps and two large postmarks.  Grade: 1

    As a reminder, we try to follow the spelling used on the postcards themselves.  Two of these unused 1967 Hiawatha cards 46781-H (30433) are available.  They say this lighthouse was built in 1872 and in operation until 1957, with “the possibility that a marine museum may some day open.”  At least one internet source says the lighthouse went into operation in 1892, and that it did indeed reopen as a museum in 2004.  Grades: 2

    As with several other aviation-themed postcards from Belarus, this was “prepared with the participation of the Museum of Aviation Technique (Baravaya village of Minsk region)”.  Two of these cards are available, both mailed.  One has large stamp and clear postmark (Grade: 1, $4) while the other has a full postmark but partly torn stamp (Grade: 3, $2).
