  • Recalling Memories — Li Jiang (Set of 16) (Yunnan, PR China)

This is an unused set of big (4-3/4″ x 7-1/2″) cards showing everything of interest in or near Li Jiang.  Our scan shows the back cover of the heavy paper cover, and therefore the cards, but the difference is that the cards themselves have printed captions on the fronts that identify the scenes in Chinese and also have dreamy, poetic comments in Chinese and English.  It is a high-quality set, very Chinese in style, and several of these cards show religious elements including prayer wheels.  Grade: 1

    Code: 35001132

    Price: $29.00

Recalling Memories — Li Jiang (Set of 16) (Yunnan, PR China)
  • Shangri-La (Set of 20) (Yunnan, PR China)

This a very heavy, very high quality set of 20 large (4″ x 8-1/4″) unused cards inside the cardboard cover shown in our scan.  Honestly, they are spectacular.  Issued by China Post in 2016, each card has pre-printed, coloured 80 fen postage and extensive captions on front and back.  The scenes are identified, and include essentially everything of touristic interest in the Shangri-La district.   You will find Dukezong, wolfsbane flowers, Haba Snow Mountain, Tiger Leaping Gorge, Songzanlin Temple, and many more.  The ultimate Shangri-La souvenir.  Grade: 1

    Code: 35001133

    Price: $59.00

Shangri-La (Set of 20) (Yunnan, PR China)
  • Impression of Shangri-La (Set of 16) (Yunnan, PR China)

These are quite “busy” unused cards, front and back.  You can see most of one of the 16 through the cut-out window in the cardboard cover shown in our scan.  They have heavily serrated edges, and each card has extensive text.  On the front, it identifies the scene — all around the Shangri-La area, including Dukezong.  On the back, it’s a kind of dreamy, romantic ode.  We’ve not tried the QR codes on the reverse!  Grade: 1

    Code: 35001134

    Price: $19.00

Impression of Shangri-La (Set of 16) (Yunnan, PR China)
  • Dali “Photography Postcard” (Set of 10) (Yunnan, PR China)

Showing you the back cover of this set is our way of letting you see thumbnails of the unused cards inside.  They are fully captioned in Chinese only, briefly on the fronts and extensively on the reverses.  This set is slightly different from many similar sets as it has more of an urban feel to it.  Chongsheng Temple is in there.  Grade: 1

    Code: 35001135

    Price: $19.00

Dali “Photography Postcard” (Set of 10) (Yunnan, PR China)
  • Dali Hand-painted postcards (Set of 10) (Yunnan, PR China)

In our opinion, these artwork renditions are very well done.  Our scan shows thumbnails on the back cover of the set.  The cards have brief (Chinese) captions on the fronts, and more extensive text (also in Chinese) on the reverse.  They represent the standard tourist destinations, including Three Pagodas, in or near Dali city.  Grade: 1

    Code: 35001136

    Price: $14.00

Dali Hand-painted postcards (Set of 10) (Yunnan, PR China)
  • Mei Li Ba La Ge Zong – Dolmalacan (Yunnan, PR China)

Issued by China Post, and with pre-printed coloured 80 fen postage, this unused card is from a series showing attractions in the immediate Balagezong area.  This one is captioned “Dolmalacan” on the front, in Chinese.   Zhuo Malakang (Dolmalacan) is a Guanyin Temple built by the Tusi Sindogi after the Dayong Mansion more than 1300 years ago, then rebuilt on the original 21 Duomu Scripture Hall due to its age. The temple displays a total of 21 Tzu-mu, a goddess of the clan who saves suffering beings, as well as a group of women worshipped by various sects of Tibetan Buddhism.  Grade: 1

  • China Yunnan (Set of 16) (PR China)

The formal (translated) name of this set is “Colorful South” and the back cover — our scan shows it — says there are 16 cards, presumably the same as the thumbnails.  If so, the focus is on rural scenes.  The unopened set is sealed in such a way that we can’t easily open it, so we won’t.  Try the QR code?  Grade: 1

  • Khugnu-khan Monastery (Mongolia)

An AI-generated summary tells us:  “The monastery was founded in the 17th century by Prince Bishrelt and was later dedicated to one of his teachers by Zanabazar in the late 1600s.  It was destroyed in 1688 by Galdan Boshigt, a fighter opposing Manchu rule, who allegedly tied lamas up with ropes, giving the area the name “Khogno Khan” (meaning “tied with ropes”).  After the fall of communism in Mongolia in 1990, the monastery was restored through the efforts of former monks and local communities.”  This unused Mongol Post card clearly shows no reconstruction at that site, unless that small building in the background qualifies, but we were not there to see for ourselves.  Grade: 1

First established in 1654, the monastery grew to be one of the largest and most important in Mongolia at its height in the mid 19th century, housing up to 8000 monks. • Uvurkhangai, Tuvkhun Monastery (Mongolia)

Wikipedia tells us (abridged): “Tövkhön Monastery (Mongolian: Төвхөн хийд), one of Mongolia’s oldest Buddhist monasteries, is located in Övörkhangai Province about 47 km southwest of Kharkhorin.  The monastery was first established in 1648, by the then-14-year-old Zanabazar, the first Jebtsundamba Khutuktu and spiritual head of Tibetan Buddhism for the Khalkha in Outer Mongolia.  He determined that the location on the Shireet Ulaan Uul mountain, overlooking a hill at 2,600 meters above sea-level, was an auspicious location. The first physical structures were built upon his return from studying in Tibet in 1653. Zanabazar used the monastery, originally called Bayasgalant Aglag Oron (Happy Secluded Place), as his personal retreat over the course of 30 years.”  This is an unused Mongol Post card.  Grade: 1
