Lovely old Curteich-Chicago linen card 506, the essence of what old postcards really should be. Mailed in 1948 with postmark and (slightly abraded) stamp, brown with age, carrying a happy message from intrepid travellers. Grade: 2

Dudley Canal Tunnel (England)
In 2011, the writer mailed this card (with a brilliant 67p train stamp, and postmark) and took the trouble to have it wrapped in the Royal Mail’s special protective cover so that the card would not be damaged. It wasn’t. Grade: 1

This card can fit into so many categories. It was mailed in 1915, with stamp and Seattle full postmark. Little bit stained and roughly handled, but very specific and very good of kind. Grade: 3

This unused card has a perforated edge on the left, so it was part of a set. The tunnel itself is 3,200 feet long and, at least at the time, Wyoming’s longest. On US highways 14/20, it probably still is. Grade: 1
