Unused card from early 2000s, showing Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, and we have a warm spot for it (no pun intended) because it was printed in Hong Kong. Grade: 1

Oahu, Koko Crater (Hawaii)
As of the 1960s, this Koko Crater cone represented the “most recent volcanic activity on the Island of Oahu,” some 5000 years ago. Unused Nani Li’i card S-214. Grade: 1

Kilauea Iki (Hawaii)
Kilauea Iki volcano is in Hawaii National Park and the caption on reverse breathlessly announces that when it came back to life on November 14th, 1959, after 100 years of inactivity, “her fiery lava fountain towered 1900 feet! Five hundred feet higher than the Empire State Building!” Nani Li’i card S-175, unused, and definitely after November 14th, 1959! Grade: 1

Unused Nani Li’i card S-180 with the same caption as the previous card of Kilauea Iki. We could Google to see if this volcano has erupted since 1959, but we would rather use the time entering more cards. Grade: 1

Haleakala Crater (Maui, Hawaii)
Unused Nani Li’i card S-54 tells us this “vast pit in Hawaii National Park on Maui (Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa in distance) is 21 miles around the rim.” We’ve not yet walked it to find out. Grade: 1

Lassen Volcanic National Park
Mailed in 1994, and with a full postmark from Mineral, this card would be just great apart from a severely abraded stamp. Otherwise, it provides good views of this lesser-known national park. Grade: 4

Mailed in 1984 from Mineral, CA with full postmark and 40-cent Piper airmail stamp. Grade: 1

Dexter Press 91671-B card was mailed in 1967. It has two stamps, but the postmark is unreadable. Grade: 2

Wudalianchi Volcanic Park (folio) (China)
In Heilongjiang, this park has five connected lakes. The folio of nine cards, published by the Posts and Telecommunications Administration of Wudalianchi and which explains everything in Chinese and English, is as-new. Grade: 1

This card was stamped for mailing (and was mailed) in 1978 but there’s no postmark. It was issued by Philippine Airlines. Grade: 3

Just a beautiful unmailed card, evening view, made even more desirable through addition of a large postmark from Eremo on the upper front. Minor abrasions on edges and corners do not detract in any way from this really nice and exotic card. Grade: 1

The reverse caption on this unused H.S. Crocker card K-105 says that Mt. Lassen is “America’s most recently active volcano,” meaning that the card either pre-dates Hawaii as a state, or they mis-spoke. Aging a bit but in good condition. Grade: 1

What an odd, brilliant, haunting card is this. It looks more like a nuclear holocaust. The printed caption is in Russian but the writer has explained in the message. Mailed in 2012 with seven stamps and three large Moscow postmarks. A small amount of postmark ink transfer on the front. Grade: 2

IF we were to open a theme category called “obscure” (we’re not going to do that), this card of a 1947 volcanic eruption would fit right in. Mailed from the USA (not Iceland!) in 2013 with Global Forever stamp, Par Avion label, and substantial processing ink smudging on the front. Grade: 4

In 1930, someone removed this card from a set (see perforated edge) and wrote a message to a lady in Penang. No indication that it ever got mailed, though. Smeroe may also be spelled as Semeru. Grade: 4
