Early version of Maid of the Mist (now it has two levels), on an unused card published for the Seagram Tower. Grade: 2
-
M/V Glacier Bay Explorer
A nice card mailed from Juneau in 1984 with 20-cent stamp and full postmark. We are wondering if the snow is still there now. Grade: 1
-
Sampans (Hong Kong)
Another fast-disappearing scene. Unused card. Grade: 2
-
Queen Mary (Long Beach, California)
This unused “Official Queen Mary Souvenir” card from the late 1960s has serrated edges and would be a superb specimen were it not that someone cut a small notch out of the lower right front corner. It’s in the white border area only. But it reduces the condition to Grade: 5
-
Queen Mary, silhouetted (USA)
Unused card with serrated edges, aging now, like its subject. Grade: 2
-
Junk at sunset (Hong Kong)
Unused 5″ x 7″ card 001 from the Tourists Cards series. Actually there aren’t many (or any) more of these in Hong Kong’s harbour now. Grade: 1
-
Royal vessel for Handover ceremony (Hong Kong)
British dignitaries used this in the run-up to the handover of Hong Kong from Britain to China in 1997. Of course, in this card, you can barely see it because of the support vessel. Unused. Grade: 1
-
Boat People at Aberdeen fishing village (Hong Kong)
This type of scene is now to be found only on postcards, where it is undeniably safer and healthier than before. Unused 5-1/2″ x 7″ card 013 from Tourists Cards. Grade: 1
-
Jaanmurtajat (icebreakers) (Finland)
From 2010, a card with stamp, partial postmark, blue Priority sticker, and the address fully taped on. Grade: 3
-
Kvarken Archipelago (Finland)
Finland deserves full marks for their postage stamps. This card, mailed but with no postmark, has an exceptionally clever stamp of a comic pumpkin. We will be very happy if someone lets us know the symbolism behind this! As for the card, mailed in 2010, it shows to no great advantage Finland’s first World Natural Heritage. Grade: 3
-
The Wings of Freedom, Rouen (France)
Les voiles de la Liberte. Larger (4.75″ x 6.75″) card with two stamps and full postmark, also just a little bit of postal battering. Grade: 2
-
Chinese junk (Hong Kong)
The photo on this unused card dates from the late 1970s or so. The only sails like this now visible in Hong Kong Harbour are on tourist vessels, and almost none of those. You know how else we know it’s an old picture? The crystal-clear sky. Mailed in 2011 with five stamps, two full postmarks, and blue trilingual airmail sticker. Grade: 2
-
Boat People in Causeway Bay (Hong Kong)
Unused card from (likely) the mid-to-late 1990s, judging from the Salem sign in back and the absence of one very tall building (IFC2) that was just being built. Alas, this type of scene is more or less gone from Hong Kong now. It used to be possible to sit in a sampan and other boats would glide alongside and cook a meal for you. What with pollution and all, that might not be so much fun now anyway. Grade: 1
-
Saugatuck Chain Ferry (USA)
Unused Saugatuck Drug Company card P316257 showing the hand-cranked ferry, established in 1838, that spans the Kalamazoo River. Grade: 1
-

Alas, poor Jumbo, who met her end in 2022 under circumstances even Agatha Christie would admire. Unused Tourists Cards (5-1/2″ x 7″) #038. Grade: 1
-
The Blue Funnel Line (England)
Without more extensive research, we don’t know which of the Blue Funnel Line vessels this was. The card is artwork not a photograph. It was mailed in 1914, with stamp and full postmark. Nice … but what ship is it? Grade: 2
-
R.M.S. Empress of Canada
On July 5, 1930, Mr. Thibault of Manila either handed this card or received it as Compliments–not postally used, and heavily faded, but iconic and original for this vessel. Grade: 4
-
Conte Rosso, Lloyd Sabaud, Sala de escritura
Not postally used, and creased near the left edge, this vintage postcard has a long message in French that fully occupies the reverse. A scene like this is so unimagineable today. Grade: 4
-
Glass Bottom Boats, Silver Springs (Florida)
Unused card whose caption says “Spring is largest in world.” Grade: 2
-

-
T.N. Conte Rosso
In 1935, Doris wrote to Miss Fullerton from shipboard en route to Shanghai. She used this card, with its two different stamps and full postmark. Somehow, Miss Fullerton in Hong Kong (staying at the Peak Hotel, which burned down in 1938) received the card, and then, many years later, so did we. And so can you. Worth it. Grade: 3
-
Rickmer Rickmers, Hamburg (Germany)
Mailed card, stamp and postmark. Grade: 2
-
Dragon Boat Festival (Hong Kong)
Or, more accurately, the decoration on one vessel, shown on this unused 5-1/2″ x 7″ Tourists Cards #011. Grade: 1

-
Boat House, Bronx Park, New York City
Unused Manhattan Post Card Co. card 102227 showing “one of the finest parks in America.” The front of this card is in terrific condition; the reverse edges are flaking and abraded, and there’s a small tape residue. Grade: 3
-
Steamer Virginia Lee (USA)
Old Curteich-Chicago linen card was mailed in 1947. The postmark is there but the stamp is abraded and there’s also tape residue. However if you’ve been looking for a card of this vessel … Grade: 4
